why are they adding MSG to foods?!

Question: Why are they adding MSG to foods?
like salty foods? such as chips or other products

monosodium glutamate is the leading cause of obesity and diabetes

even though it is a flavor enhancer, it still causes all sorts of problems and i believe it disrupts the thyroid gland and messing up the metabolism

should they ban MSG and find a safer alternative?

>I am diabetic and I am here to tell you that MSG does no such thing! I outta know, I have had diabetic classes in a hospital from the professionals and we studied all the foods and additives that could lead to diabetis and MSG IS NOT ONE OF THEM!

MSG is what is called a food enhancer...it has a high 5' nucleotide affect on the tongue which is the same thing a meaty-savory note. It is a source of a lot of sodium so you want to control your intake. Studies have been done in universities and by the government on MSG and the entire lexicon of study indicates that there are mixed results that contradict each other on the issue of MSG safety. There is enough contrary scientific evidence on both sides of the issue to negate each other and leave it inconclusive is what I am saying...so at this time, MSG will continue to be used to enhance the flavor of foods and it is just up to YOU, to read the label and decide whether or not to consume the food. If in a restaurant, tell them not to use it in your food.

At some point, the consumer has to take responsibility and just stop whining...

Oh yes, one other thing, I am a food technologist.

There is one goal of corporations in the United States: Optimize profits on behalf of shareholders. By law, directors of corporations are legally obligated to act in this way. It's the law.

If you are running a fast food restaurant you want the cheapest ingredients that are the most flavorful and addicting. MSG is part of the delivery of most meals and it is not even labeled most of the time. For a blank stare, try asking a fast food employee if the meal contains MSG. They don't know. A competing restaurant will be out of business quickly if they do not match up with the others. This means MSG is in most low-cost restaurants and low-cost convenience foods. Any large fast food restaurant uses MSG without any restriction to quantity used (it's fatal in sufficiently large doses). The appointed leadership of the FDA, in direct confrontation to their grunt work scientists, have approved over 5,000 ingredients as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) over the past decades. That means, these additive are not subjected to study by anyone. MSG is GRAS as is aspartame.

MSG is injected into baby rats and mice to make them over eat for the rest of their lives.

Some convenience foods do not use MSG, however they boost the quantity of salt, sugar, and fat to make up for it. A low fat convenience food most often will contain excess quantities of salt and sugar.

When Weight Watchers first manufactured a truly healthy frozen dinner, nobody bought it. I tried it only three times. Now, Weight Watchers is smarter. They use exactly the same unhealthy ingredients as everyone else in their foods, and then make claims about the health of the product (healthy based upon the reduced quantity of the food). Less salt, less sugar, less fat is because of smaller portions, not a healthier proportion of nutritious foods.

Do not trust your friendly clown or friendly owner. KFC is dangerous as is most convenience food in the USA.
