I can get free meat this way?!

Question: I can get free meat this way?
So I live in a rural area and is surrounded by woods and grass, and I have an idea of getting pairs of goats and cows, because they only eat grass as food and I let them eat grass and grow and they reproduce and then I eat them and then their babies reproduce more and I eat them so it keeps on going and I get free meat?

Three cheers ! ! Joanna - your right on
although the change from city to the rural life is often a true learning experience it can be started small - chickens and rabbits - - with enough money even small amounts can still be bartered and even a small garden can - may add to development to true independence
But it will require 24 / 7 - - only found in retirement from the city or a healthy annuity and S.S.

John Smith - - the people who came to the USA a hundred years ago came with first hand knowledge - - and a wealth of staple supplies
Today you will still gather all the equipment needed to make such a transition possible
SO plan - - make lists - - read information on each subject of your IDEA. .
good luck
Is Mother Earth magazine still published - ? ? - online ? ? etc

If they are not fenced in any where they will not really stay close by. Unless you have the facilities and knowledge to process the meat you need to pay for the processing.

Is there a water source neer by? Such as a river or stream?

Then you have to consider the winter. You will most likely have to provide food during the winter months as well as making sure there is an open water source.

Also do you have freezer space for a whole aniimal.

I wouldn't slaughter the "parents" as it takes about 2 years for the animal to reproduce.

I highly suggest you do a lot of research on farm animals and what it takes to care for them. It's NOT free by any means! There could also be regulations in your area so you'd have to find that out as well. It can be very expensive when it comes to vet care for them. You'll need shelter for them, especially if you live in an area where it gets cold and snows. You'll need more than just grass for them to eat, you'll have to buy hay and grain for them to eat. You'll need troughs for them to have fresh, clean water and you have to fill the troughs daily with water. You'll have to buy fencing materials and build fences since they will roam wherever they want. You have to know how to help them give birth if they're having problems, such as breech.

Taking care of farm animals is pretty much a full time job and it's not cheap to do!

It ain't free. You have to purchase the original animals, take care of them-health wise & ensure they don't roam, for example, have a shed for them, etc. You will need enough pasturage to feed them, and generally, one doesn't. There is also winter, when grass is not nearly so abundant, lol. Either way, you will need to purchase feed to supplement the local greenery. Do you know how to take care of animals?

Then when you want to use one animal for meat, you need to kill it, dress it, butcher it, package and store the meat.
Do you have the skills & equipment to do so? Freezer space?

Have you ever eaten goat? If not, you may find it not very palatable (depends of age, sex and breed)
