Why is there a lid on my tobacco pipe?!

Question: Why is there a lid on my tobacco pipe?
I just got this awesome "cossack pipe" for v-day. It has a metal lining inside it but what confuses me is this brass like lid. The lid flips down and up and has 4 small holes in it. Whats the purpose of this lid? Do I flip it down while smoking? Is it just to shield the bowl?

If you have an actual tobacco pipe for smoking pipe tobacco, then what your pipe has whats called a wind cap. It is designed to keep to much air from getting into your pipe if your smoking outside. I have a couple wind caps that I can place on my pipes if I am smoking outside when riding my horse and its windy. They can get in the way in my opinion for tamping and relighting. And yes you flip it down after lighting your pipe.

me, I smoke a pipe.

It is to let the tobacco to keep smouldering in the rain, and for safety if you put it in your pocket.

It is a wind shield created for drivers at the turn of the 20th century.
