Question: What is a Jicama is it like a potato?
I was at the store the other day and I saw Jicama. I remember seeing it on a few cooking shows, what is it? It looked starchy-like, if that makes sense, and I was thinking maybe it was like a potato? So, what's a Jicama?

Answers:

Jicama is a root with a papery-yellow exterior and creamy white interior with a crisp texture that resembles raw potato or pear. The flavor is sweet and starchy, reminiscent of some apples or raw green beans, and it is usually eaten raw, sometimes with salt, lemon, or lime juice and chili powder. It is also cooked in soups and stir-fried dishes.



Jicama is a very common staple in Mexico.

It grows underground (it's a tubercule) and has a lot of fiber, almost 90% weight is water and the rest is edible fiber. Has ultra low calories.

In Mexico it's usually eaten raw, or covered with lime juice, salt and ground chiles. Refrigerating it before hand makes a cool snack for summer.

It's also used raw (in strips or small pieces) for salads, sushi, fruit cocktails, etc

It can also be cooked with other vegetables to make an interesting addition to a stir fry.

In Mexico it's usually sold in street corner carts, either alone or in combination with watermelon, pineapple, mango or coconut. Please see third photo of below link
