Does anyone know an alternative to chewing gum?!

Question: Does anyone know an alternative to chewing gum?
Hi, I have noticed that I really like chewing things, last year I spent around £260 on chewing gum, which is ridiculous. Also the side effects are not very good (chewing gum has laxative effects). I then moved on to soft mints, smints and normal mints, but all of these have laxatives in them, So I was wondering is there anything else that I can chew that doesnt contain lavatives and something that would last a long time.
Thanks
Ben

Coconut is something that takes ages to chew, you can buy bags of dried sliced coconut in most supermarkets, health food shops, asian supermarkets and the internet, its a lot healthier than chewing gum and doesn't have a laxative effect. If you can be bothered buying whole coconuts instead of the bags of dried sliced is a lot cheaper.
Traditional liquorice is very chewy and can take forever to get through, you can get it in old sweet shops, the internet and health food shops.
If you like chewing gum why don't you switch to a cheaper brand, im not sure whether you live in the uk, but aldi and lidl do there own brand of chewing gum in little bags so you do actually get more in a bag.
You can also try caramel or toffee or nougat the really chewy kind that takes forever.
Why don't you try and switch to hard boiled sweets and suck them instead ? they don't have to be mints, you can get fruit flavoured hard boiled sweets at every single supermarket, worthers originals last forever as well.

I remember as a child we chewed sticks of arrowroot until it was like cloth.
You could put it down and pick it up again hours later and it would still have lots of flavour.
Very unhygienic by today's standards but never did us any harm.
We snipped the end off and it was like new again.
Problem is I haven't seen it for years, and if you found it, it would probably cost you twice as much as your chewing gum.
Sorry I haven't been of much help, but thanks for the memories.
