Cheese and crackers. Just don't take too long to eat the cheese. Without a cooler and ice it should be good for 2 hours if it is not too hot..

How about a couple of big bags of tortilla chips and a couple jars of salsa? The guacamole chips are really good.

How about a large bowl of fresh fruit? Not cut up or anything... but where people can grab a piece and go? Bananas, oranges, pears, apples, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, grapes, anything goes. You can even just bring a whole watermelon - just make sure you pack a big knife very carefully :)

Brownies are always a good choice and you can jazz them up a bit by using coffee instead of water (or adding instant coffee granules to the batter) and a little cinnamon. Voila. Mexican brownies.

If you want something snackish, try dried fruits, nuts, some Italian or French bread, a variety of olives, maybe some hard cheeses.

Take picnic items.
Eggs:- Truffle Devilled
12 whole eggs, hard-boiled and split lengthwise. Whites and yolks separated.
1/2 Cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons chives, minced
1/4 Teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 Teaspoon truffle oil
1 black truffle, minced & peeled
salt & pepper to taste
1 Tablespoon snipped chives
Directions
Mix egg yolks with Mayo and chives and remaining ingredients, except egg whites! Mash with a fork until mixture is creamy.
Fit a pastry bag with a star tip and fill bag with egg mixture.
Pipe yolks into the egg whites (A plastic sandwich bag can be used with a corner cut off if no pastry bag is available.).
Garnish with snipped chives.
Makes 24 eggs.

As long as you have a cooler with lots of ice, you'll have more options than just chips and cookies. If you don't feel like cooking, pick up a few pre-made salads at Trader Joe's (Thai Noodle Salad is my fave). Hummus and pita bread. Gourmet sandwiches. Pick up some biscotti if you're tired of Chips Ahoy cookies.

PIta bread and hummous
cream cheese and bagel chips
apples and cheese

peanut butter & jelly sandwich
