It is't the nicest, I agree. Some are more tolerable, but those cheap value ones are the worst of the worst. No matter how low on money I am, I will never buy them. As for those long life ones, I cannot tell you what they are like, I wouldn't dare try them. I always wonder what goes into those things - bread isn't meant to last for 7 days as fresh as when bought!
Our bread is foul muck and it is all due to the dreaded Chorley Wood method of making bread by steam raising it. You can find some artisan bread makers who sell at farmer's markets but I make my own. I did a one day course and to be honest it couldn't be easier - it isn't half the chore that you think it is going to be and produces a much better result than shop bought. I bake once per week and as the bread just goes a bit dry rather than mouldy it keeps quite well - as it starts to go dry I just toast it rather than eating it raw.
I don't buy cheap bread, I buy the proper stuff from a proper bakery and as a chef, I make my own about once a week. Unfortunately many people don't understand quality, let alone pay appropriately for it. The same thing will happen on the continenent--they're not far behind.
Organic food is worth every penny.
No doubt I'll get the thumbs down for mentioning 'organic'.
Agree! Tastes like paper...and what kind of bread lasts 14days?
Don't want to know what's in it.
Best thing to do is imho - to go to your local (preferably french/polish/turkish-arab) bakery,
get a smaller loaf and taste the difference ;)
Paper Mache is to good a name for something that is absolute yuck... OK it keeps fresh for days, but is it worth wasting your money on. In fact I think I just might prefer to actually eat "Paper Mache".
Chris
thats why anyone with any taste buds makes their own bread, including myself
we have a different bread almost every day
i dont think i know anyone who buys bread anymore
Agree as well. Its all about mass production and profit. Its the same with potatoes, they are produced to give a standard size and taste doesn't come into it.
You still get proper baked bread in Scotland. Whenever I go home I grab three or four plain loafs to bring back down south for myself and Scottish friends. They do the same!
yep, youre right, no nutritional vale either, only good for toasting, wholemeal does it for me !
