Do you buy Girl Scout cookies?!

Question: Do you buy Girl Scout cookies?
I quit buying them as it is my understanding that only a very small % of the $ from the cookies goes to the girls/troop. The rest goes to Girl Scouts "corporate". Is that true? I was a Girl Scout and I miss buying the cookies.

Answers:

i know that sometimes there are prizes and recognition for the girls who sell. i know growing up no one ever bought from me when ever i did anything like that. it really makes the girls feel good to be able to sell them. i also always buy a cup of lemon aid from kids or cookies at a yard sale.

You are correct that only a small amount of the money reaches the girls in a direct or meaningful way. Although they are a non-profit organization and boast of having many volunteers in their organization, it would be surprising to many to realize how much of the incoming money is used to pay salaries of higher-ups in the local offices and regional offices, not to mention the natioinal level offices. The girls' families also pay high amounts of money for them to attend camps - even though the girls have participated in fund raising activities which you would think would make these excessive charges for camping unnecessary. The camps I'm familiar with are unheated, and not air conditioned. They tend to have basic shower rooms, and very rustic cabin facilities. The camp managers are only allowed meager funding to keep the camps up to acceptable levels of use. I would never support their organization now that I've seen its inner workings. Continue to research this, and share your findings.

Friend is a paid camp manager for the girl scouts. Another friend volunteered for certain duties at these camps. Friend also was hired into their organization and paid for certain duties when camps were in session during summer.

Whether GS Cookies are an efficient way to contribute to the local GS troops or not, it takes a tough neighbor to turn away the innocent, amateur pitches of a young Girl Scout at the door...AND...it takes unbelievable willpower to pass up a box of Thin Mints! Next to the old Marshall Fields Frango Mints, I think Thin Mints are about as good as it gets. (OK, slight exaggeration, but not by too much).

Why can't the GS organization figure out how to manufacture these cookies a couple times a year and local troops figure out how to inventory the cookies and sell them throughout the year?

If the GS Cookie pitch comes from aggressive parents in the workplace or PTA, I find myself surprisingly far more able to resist.

I do, but am so tired of doing so. I can't control myself with them so I have to give them away immediately. I guess I'm just tired of supporting this cause. And you get bombarded by so many people it is crazy. I do like that they have an option this year to donate the cookies to other organizations.

Glad this year the cookies will be delivered before Lent starts. As one who celebrates Lent, I always find it odd that Girl Scouts schedules their delivery right in the middle of it when so many people have given up sweets.

Mine are going to my 101 year old grandma who still lives in her own 3 story home! She loves cookies!

I don't know where the money goes, but it is WAY too much to spend for cookies! Especially when they contain the same ingredients and mass of chemicals you can get on any grocery store shelf for less than half the price!

Actually, I usually bake our own now.

but yes, I was a Girl Scout when I was younger, too, and my mother was even a professional Girl Scout in her twenties. It's too bad what has happened to this once fine organization.

Girl Scouts are a wonderful organization and they need support on the corporate level. I always support scouting.

When I was a little girl I was in Camp Fire Girls. We sold mints not cookies but it's essentially the same thing. When we went out selling and all the people walked past us and didn't buy our mints I swore that when I was an adult I would never just walk past the little girls. I'm no longer the little girl selling for her group, today I'm the adult and I never walk past little girls selling for scouting without buying a box or two. I just can't have that hard of a heart.

When asked if she wanted to buy Girl Scout cookies, Wednesday Addams replied, "Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"

I love that line.

as a girl scout i think that only 12.5% goes to the troop but it does come with prizes that they work towards and most of the time the money adds up. i usually sell about 350 and by the end of the year my whole troop together are able to pay for a big trip.

myself

YES - but only from an actual Girl Scout. I like to encourage them to overcome their shyness. I usually buy 6 boxes - 2 from 3 different Girl Scouts.

I buy them, I love girl scout cookies. I'm not sure where the money goes to but I do know they get gifts and prizes selling them. The more the sell the bigger and more prizes the get.

My little sister

I quit buying them when my bosses daughter quit selling them. I always bought from her just to give her a sale, but I think the cookies are over priced and don't really taste that good

I still buy them.
I am unaware of the distribution of the proceeds.

i dont buy them
