Question: Weekly cost for food usually? and help with foodstamps?
How much does food cost weekly, usually, for two seventeen year old girls? and can we qualify for foodstamps? do we have to be emancipated before we do? is it even worth it to apply for foodstamps?

Always apply for them, it is better to find out you can't get them when later on in months to come you find out you could have.

Allow about $50.00 pw

It is difficult to answer this, depending upon each family members eating habits. And it also depends upon whether the family members are willing to try to keep their food costs down by careful shopping for sales and use of coupons etc.

However, if I usually get by myself on about $30 per week / 1 person.

Is it worth it to apply? Most definitely! If you don't qualify, they will tell you so. It is usually based on your income level. If you make very little money, the max I believe a single person will receive is $200 per months. (I think!) There is no harm in trying to apply. Call your local social services office, or look them up on the internet for information on how to begin. If you receive food assistance you'll be given a debit-like card. Each month they load it with money on the same day of the month. You spend it at a participating grocery store for food only items. You swipe it through the card reader at the checkout stand. Any items that are NOT food you pay for separately with cash. Most major grocery stores accept it. All Walmarts accept it. You can call ahead and make sure your local stores accept the card before you try using it.

I don't know what you mean about being emancipated. Unless you're saying you are the 17 year old and have no rights as an adult yet? If you're under age, I don't think you can apply without consent of your legal guardian. However, if you're in a dire need of help, and are a minor, you will still be smart to contact your local social services office because they can tell you how to find help. They know of all sorts of agencies and groups - and will have ideas. Never give up if you need help. It is often hard to find, but it is out there.

Personal experience.

Most states have a website where you can apply for services such as food assistance. Usually, there will be a form you can fill out or information to find out if you would qualify. One of the factors considered is income and whether or not you are the head of the household. If you live with a parent or guardian, you may not be able to get assistance without them applying as their income would be considered. As for how much food assistance you get would depend on your case.

As another person wrote, you can always apply. The worst that can happen is they will deny your claim. If circumstances change, you can always re-apply.

So far as how much food would cost for both of you would depend on what you buy and how far you can stretch your food budget. Cooking and planning come in real handy here. Rice, pasta and potatoes tend to go a long way. If you always keep certain herbs, spices and pantry items on hand, you can make a lot of things without having to go to the grocery store often and spend more money in the process. Good luck to both of you!
