What causes butterfly crackers to turn green and smoke when you shake them?!

Question: What causes butterfly crackers to turn green and smoke when you shake them?
My brother left a container with about 5 butterfly crackers in his backpack for 3 months. When we opened them, they were all green and stuff. When we shook the container, and opened it, they SMOKED! Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure that they were wet before they were put into the container.

They're moldy. The "smoke" is mold spores.
