Taste buds not working correctly?!

I have a strange situation. My food tastes like waffles, oddly. Every other time it tastes like it should, but this time it just doesn't taste right. I presume it must be something with my taste buds. Is there ever any particular instance where your taste buds don't "register" your food correctly, so to speak?

This isn't a problem for me, but I'm curious. I'm absolutely sure it's not something in the food itself, however.
