Why are sodas called "soft drinks"?!

Question: Why are sodas called "soft drinks"?
Answers:

The history goes back to 1798: thats when the term "soda water" was first coined. Then in 1819 the "soda fountain" was patented by Samuel Fahnestock. And it wasnt until 1861 that the term "pop" was first coined.....

According to Wikipedia.org, soft drinks typically dont have alcohol, and hard drinks do.... Sometimes soft drinks can contain alcohol but it must be less then .5 percent of the total drink. Soft drinks usually do not include milk or other dairy.

Because they aren't alcoholic.
This used to puzzle me too, my interpretation of a soft drink, has always made me visualize watered down Ribena...

alcoholic = hard drink

nonalcoholic = soft drink

To differentiate between them and "hard" drinks, which usually would contain liquor or alcohol of some kind..

Alcoholic drinks are hard drinks, any drink without alcohol is a soft drink
