Cupcakes are a desert and are much sweeter than muffins and also have icing. Muffins are a snack and usually contain real fruit. They are both bread, and cooked in a similar manner.

The basic answer is muffins are more like a bread, and cupcakes are just basically mini-cakes. Also, the ingredients vary a bit. The basic formula for muffins is 2 cups flour, 2-4 tablespoons sugar, 2? teaspoons baking powder, ? teaspoon salt, 1 egg, ? cup oil, shortening or butter and 1 cup milk. When the fat, sugar and egg ratio in a recipe reaches double or more than this, you have reached the cake level! Also, cupcakes always have frosting, whereas muffins do not.

Cupcakes are iced. Muffins WILL NOT be iced.

Muffins are like the "basis" of the cake. They are baked in one go.

A Cupcake will be individually iced, no matter what it is, and it requires more attention.

However, muffins are tastier.

Muffins are more bread-based and cupcakes are more cake-based. Cupcakes are usually have more sugar, too, though some muffins are very sweet.

A muffin is bigger and just looks different, hard to explain.
