A lot depends on length of time you are buying groceries for, how rich you are, and where you live. If you buy in bulk it's going to be cheaper as opposed to buying groceries on a daily basis.

But all said and done, I reckon it's got to be substantially cheaper than eating out, otherwise it's not worth the trouble. For example, it costs me about $8 for a cheap meal if I eat out, maybe $20 a day if I'm thrifty.

Given that information, I wouldn't spend more than that on groceries, assuming i'm buying similar foods.

The only real answer is: More than you can afford to pay.

You normally would budget about 8% of your income on groceries.
(and 5% on eating out)

So just get your annual salary and divide it by somewhere between 400-650 to get a rough estimate of the weekly amount. (400-650 =13 to 8% divided by 52 weeks).

It's only a rough guide, like any budget you can save in other areas and spend it on things that are more important to you.

Nice food is important to me, so I over budget on food. When buying for one, it means I am single and I am not eating out very much, so I probably spend closer to 12-15% on groceries.

I don't think its the money that is the problem. If you are buying healthy foods, don't put a limit on it. Some healthy foods can get pretty pricey, but just remember all the good it's doing on the body you only have once! So basically if it's healthy foods try not to put a limit on your groceries. Don't go overboard of course, but don't restrain from it either!

Personal Reference

To me it's anything over $60 a month for one person. Unless you want expensive items like crab legs and veal and you can afford it.

It's really only too much if you can't afford it.
