Ziggy,

They aren't painted.

In the tropics, bananas are picked green. If they don't, they will ripen and rot before they get to the store. I used to work for a fruit market here in Montrose, MI many years ago. We used to go to the Grand Rapids wholesale market and buy bananas. The folks there put green ones in a gas chamber like room to start the ripening process. You can do the same thing by putting your green bananas in a sack with a couple of ripe red apples. The gas coming from the apples will cause the bananas to ripen quicker. Also, the gas is used to kill spiders and all kinds of insects hidden in the bunches of bananas.

When bananas start to turn brown, they are just over ripe, and at this time, they make the best banana cakes and banana breads. Even it they are starting to turn to mush, they are still OK to use for baking. Look for mold before you use them though. One thing to remember. Bananas don't do good in the refrigerator.

=0 Umm, I do not know what to say. How about I start off with saying, your totally wrong. People who ship those Bananas to your local super market/stores do not paint the bananas; Therefore it is NOT paint.

=) So the reason Bananas turn brown is because they rotten up, which makes them taste better. It makes them sweeter but i prefer the fully yellow one. That is why. Not because of paint.
