Question: I was making ice recently by pouring water into ice cube trays......?

In the freezer there were a few trays I filled earlier. They were almost completely frozen. One tray had a new ice cube that had what looked like a little sword of ice, maybe an inch long and very thin, sticking up into the air. How does water and or ice do that?
