Why was Aspartame approved by the FDA ?!

Question: Why was Aspartame approved by the FDA ?
despite some tests that were conducted that proved it to be dangerous?
What tests were conducted that proved it to be safe or dangerous?
and how does aspartame cause cancer?

Please help. I'm doing a research paper on Aspartame and I'm against it so I need to prove that it's bad. What are the two sides of the story?

To those of you that have said that this kid is biased, this is a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT! Don't you remember in high school when you had to choose an issue, and decide whether you would be for or against it, then find support to back up your stance? Get off the poor kid's back!

Good luck on your paper. There actually are tons of information on this. I could tell you about the chemistry of aspartame, but I think you find this out for yourself, and make sure you include in your paper how it was approved by the FDA-it's fascinating and may shock anyone who learns about it! Just keep searching and you'll find lots of information to support your stance! (I work for SweetLeaf Stevia, so I know more about aspartame than the average Joe or Jane)

Again, don't listen to people who say that all the science attests to its safety--that is not true. During the period when it was beginning to be approved, ALL the aspartame funded studies on aspartame reported that it was safe, while about 90% of independent studies found a problem. It was found that there was even manipulation in a study where tumors formed in rats, but the tumors were simply dicarded and reported as normal. It was recommended that aspartame not be approved because of the results of it causing cancer, but the new FDA comissioner at the time overruled the many recommendations. There is so much involved into how it was approved...the process shows the corruption of the FDA, and frankly their indifference regarding public health.

Good luck!

Aspartame is the most researched food additive to date. It has been proven safe over and over again and is legal in almost every country in the world.

I believe the Canadian study that showed an increase in bladder cancer in male rats was done with saccharine, not aspartame. You might want to double check me on that. Anyway, it was found that the cancer was unique to the rat's metabolism and is not even applicable to humans. It didn't even affect female rats. That has nothing to do with your paper if I am correct that it was saccharine and not aspartame.

Aspartame is a dipeptide. It is two amino acids bound together. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, so it is just a very small protein and it is metabolized by our bodies just like protein. There's really nothing scary or dangerous about it.

The sweetness is more intense and not as long lasting as regular sugar. It's an aquired taste.

Aspartame was discovered by a chemist working for a large corporation. I can't remember which one. He discovered it on accident when he spilled something he had been working on, got it on his hands and stuck his fingers in his mouth. Almost all of the artificial or non-nuturitive sweetners have a similar story, discovered by accident.

How can you be against something if you don't understand it?
How can you prove it's bad when a significant body of scientific evidence supports aspartame as safe for human consumption?

Personally I dislike the stuff intensely, and make every effort to avoid it, but that's on the basis of its flavour. That's not the same as saying it's dangerous.

Aspartame itself is not harmful to the human body so it was approved by the FDA. Like all chemical sweeteners, the body doesn't recognize it and treats it as a foreign substance. While it doesn't cause cancer or other diseases it has been shown to cause weight gain (the opposite of its intended purpose), making it a major contributor to obesity.

it was approved cause secretly the goverment is trying to kill us off slowly, OBVIOULSY !! aspartames a poision. basicly they tell us its not gonna kill us but dont consume to much. ((that's a red flag)) so yeah, i read something before about how they did test on it in the 80's and found out it was some hardcore ****, well every country on the planet stopped the chemical from being consumed to there population, except the US. studies show it causes, and worsens ADHD, foggy brain, weight gain, depression, anxiety, skin rashes, and yes even cancer if consumed alot. why? cause the chemical goes straight to your cells and damages even your DNA fragments. and are bodies aren't designed to fight off such chemical cause its man made, so over years of consuming we start gettting sick. Thats facts.

but you wanna hear something even crazier?
its said that now the our US food regualers "codex alimentarius" is legally being able to add aspartame in food and drinks without labeling its even in there now!!

quess all we can do, is smile anyways and try not to think about it huh

The tests that were conducted were done on rats, not people. The relative amount that the rats were given was so incredibly high that it would amount to like 50 times the amount a human could consume. It's not dangerous to the average human consumer. It doesn't cause cancer.

You're already against it, yet you haven't finished researching it? Unbiased or what!!!!
Research is not a case of picking and choosing what to include to support your point of view, it's about looking at ALL the evidence and drawing conclusions from it.

Listen, America doesn't give a fuc about you, so do yoruself a favor and stay away from processed/ GMO foods and eat Organic.

Greedy rich White people
