Could you bring yourself to eat this?!

Question: Could you bring yourself to eat this?
I was listening to a programme today about René Redzepi who runs the restaurant 'Noma'- judged to be the best in the world 2010. The ethos of his restaurant is basically foraging within the Nordic environment and utilising as much as possible from the whole Nordic area from Lapland, Iceland, Faroe Islands etc.

His current passion is for something called a Mahogany Clam. These creatures live for extraordinary amounts of time, 200 years plus is absolutely nothing...most live to around 400.The amount of lines on the clam shell correspond to the age in the same way tree rings do..

Now my question isn't one concerning the ethics of eating any animal, rather, if something was placed in front of you that had eeked an existence for nearly 400 years could you eat it?!

I think my lip would tremble big time ...so for me I think it's a 'no'.

Answers:

Yes. well, if i ate seafood. I think its odd to pick and choose which animal you think is ok to eat.Be a meat eater or be a vegetarian but its not more right or wrong to eat one over another. if it was a 400 year old cow...then sure i could do it, long life or not.

Saying that im a complete hypocrite - i'm a meat eater but i cant bring myself to eat offal, it gives me the heebie jeebies so i do totally understand where you're coming from

It's related to the Family Guy clam!
it seems that they do their breeding young and then just hang around, so is it better to eat an old and genetically successful animal or a young one before it has bred?

I would love to eat one, but I am not in favor of wiping out the population of those poor critters. People kill great white sharks and they live hundreds of years as well, it's akin to cutting down a Redwood tree.

Hi maybe we should think what is near us that are ancestors ate and could we eg seaweed, slugs, snails, moss ,and tree bark

BUT the answer is NO

No way, i don't care how good it tastes, I couldn't, it doesn't seem fair...
also a bit yuk too lol

I would eat it if someone paid me at least 50 dollars and gave me a Twinkie and Mountain Dew to wash it down with.

As long as it's not endangered, I'd eat it.
