Many things. First off, industrial vegetables (lol) are genetically mutated to survive harsh environments, so that they can be grown year round.
On top of that, they are sprayed with chemicals to kill off unwanted bugs.
On top of THAT, when watered, the water contains minerals which promote growth (Which actually isn't bad for the consumer, or the plant)
they are put on crack.
