Why do I get heartburn from bananas?!

Question: Why do I get heartburn from bananas?
Bananas are suppose to get rid of heart burn.. However for me, whenever I eat them, ten min later I get bad heart burn that lasts for like an hour...

Answers:

If you are eating a ripe banana and are still getting heartburn, you may be allergic to them---especially if the heartburn is combined with itching and swelling in your mouth. You also may have an allergy to latex. Bananas don't contain latex, but they do share the same kind of protein, along with avocados, that cause allergic reactions. Have your doctor refer you to an allergy specialist if you think this kind of allergy is keeping you from enjoying one of the best foods for you.

Are you letting them ripen?

Bananas are commonly recommended to relieve heartburn, since they have antacid chemicals in them.

However, a ripe banana is acidic; it has a pH around 5. That's less acid than many fruits, but more acid than most vegetables.

I don't think the acidity is what's causing the problem, though. I think your stomach is just having trouble digesting some of the starches in the banana. Try letting them ripen a little longer before you eat them. If they're still completely golden, they're not entirely ripe. Wait until they have at least some flecks of brown on them first.

If the result is agony, you may simply be having a reaction to some of the sugars in the banana, in which case there's not much you can do about it. If it happens with other fruits or vegetables, you should get to a doctor and be checked out to make sure that your stomach valves are operating correctly and that your metabolism is up to snuff.

The most common cause of banana induced heartburn: Bananas can cause heartburn in some people because of the potassium. Potassium can be an irritant in a persons stomach lining, but not necessarily an allergic reaction. Studies have shown potassium supplements contain less than 99 mg of potassium but have been linked to heartburn---a medium banana contains 451 mg of potassium.

BUT~

Bananas are a natural antacid,. They neutralize an acid stomach. In most cases, they will give heartburn relief in minutes. For a soothing, natural antacid, eat a banana for heartburn relief instead of an OTC antacid tablet. Most people prefer the banana taste. John Goldenring, MD, MPH, Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital, San Diego, CA. says that bananas can provide heartburn relief by stimulating the stomach lining’s production of mucus. Mucus creates a natural barrier between your stomach lining and gastric acids that cause the burning of heartburn.

It sounds like she could have acid reflux. Heartburn is one many symptoms of acid reflux and can cause a great deal of pain and inconvenience.

It could be a number of factors causing it but the most common heartburn trigger is food. What happens is certain foods cause your stomach to produce more acids and stomach contents as well as acids get pushed out of your lower esophageal sphincter (the valve between your stomach and esophagus) and back into your esophagus. These acids eat away at your esophagus causing irritation, heartburn, a sour taste in your mouth, etc. There are a number of symptoms.

I've attached a link that will give you symptoms of acid reflux, treatments, and how to prevent it. Specifically, read the causes of heartburn to see if you are doing or eating something that is triggering it.

I have the same probablem. there is sugar in bananas. you need a probiotic. check you local healthfood store. your stomach acids are low and can't handle the sugars. you might have to go on a little cider vinegar suppliment for a little bit. sounds gross, but it works like a charm for me.
