Ewwwww bad sour cream is nasty

Really anything that needs refrigeration and is a dairy product will go bad at some point (some sooner than others). Sour cream can last quite a while, and when it's starting to go bad it'll be way more sour smelling than it was originally--if it's old enough it can get mold too which is a more easier sign to spot.

because it is dairy and dairy products tend to spoil then say something like chips, because a bag of chips has preservatives in in that can usually last up until a year.

that's NOT an expiration date
that's a "freshness" date used by companies to move old product

sour cream can go bad... but it takes quite a while.

Because it's a dairy item and it will spoil eventually.

eventually it will unsour and you'll be left with creme
