What kind of food should i be eating?!

Question: What kind of food should i be eating?
I want to start losing weight, and need to know what kind of food to eat. I currently train in Kung Fu, so the physical workout part is already there, and i know about eating protein and such. I also avoid soda as much as i can, but seeing as i grew up on it, i have a few unbearable cravings. Right now i would say i drink 1-2 cans od soda a week, which is a lot better than a few months ago where it was nearly 10 cans a week.

I saw on some News station someone mentioned avoid any food that is packaged, such as chips, frozen food, etc, but does that mean i need to avoid packaged meat like steak and all in the meat section?

Basically i just need to know what i should be eating for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and possible snacks throughout the day.. Also, is Juice ok to drink? The cheapest i can get where i live is Juicy Juice...

Also, if you know, what is the proper/healthy way to cook the foods? I like nearly any type of stlye of cooking except for BBQ & Grilling. I especialy like baking food, like chicken and pork chops...

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

if you want to be healthy then you must eat oil less food.

You should definitely avoid all packaged foods. They have a lot of junk hidden in them under different names on the labels (artificial/natural flavoring, MSG, trans fats, etc.). You should stick to eating WHOLE foods, nothing processed. Keep everything as close to its natural state as possible (Eg. instead of fries choose cooked potatoes, instead of packaged meals you throw in the microwave choose a home-cooked meal). If you're having cravings for sugar you can help control them with L-glutamine supplements. For emergencies, just pop the pill in half and out it under your tongue to help it dissolve quickly and you wont have them anymore. After a while your cravings should subside. You should remember that in any diet you shouldn't be starving at all. A diet should be something you can live by, not do for a few weeks and go back to your regular eating habits and gain back all the weight you lost while starving yourself.

Well done on cutting down the soda - that's a whole load of calories you don't need and will defintiely help control your weight.

When people recommend avoiding packaged food, they usually mean premade, processed food, which invariably has a bunch of junk added like extra fats, salt or sugar, and chemical preservatives. Stuff like plain fish fillets, chicken breast or steak, with nothing done to them or added, are fine to buy in packages.

Juice is okay to drink (make sure the one you drink doesn't have anything added) but it is higher in calories than you'd imagine, so you shouldn't drink too much a day. Nutritionists recommend only one glass... Switch it out for water and herbal teas. You should drink at least 8 cups (250ml) of water a day - more if you're working out.

Cooking methods don't make an awful lot of difference to food health, except for frying or deep frying where you're adding fat to the foods. Of course, if you only use a tiny bit of oil, and pick a healthy oil like rapeseed, it's not really anything to worry about, but definitely avoid deep frying, and avoid recipes that include a lot of oil or butter. When you bake or roast food, reeduce the amount of oil you use.

There isn't a magic formula for what you need to eat for each meal - you just need to find something that works for you and is balanced. For an example, you might eat cereal/oatmeal with milk and some fruit in the morning, OR an omelette with a vegetable. Then midmorning you could snack on some chopped veggies/fruit/low-fat crackers and houmous or cheese/low fat yogurt. For lunch make sure you get in another vegetable and some protein. Choose lean meats and wholegrain breads. A chicken salad sandwich would be good, or a tuna salad, or a soup and a roll - there are so many options. Midafternoon, another healthy snack like in the morning. Dinner, use a small plate and fill half of it with veggies, a quarter with starches (potato, rice, pasta) and a quarter with proteins (lean meat, fish, beans). Don't be afraid to have another healthy snack later in the evening too - it's a myth that eating late makes you put on weight. Better to fuel your body properly and not be hungry all night!

If you want to lose weight, the four most important things are:

- Cut down fat and sugar. You don't have to cut out fat entirely - it's a vital nutrient - but we all eat too much if we're not careful.

- Reduce your portions. This is so important. If you can shrink your appetite it will help you control your weight long term.

- Do extra exercise - something more than what you normally do, because what you normally do obviously isn't enough.

- Drink plenty of water, to flush out the rubbish and avoid the water-retention that comes from dehydration.

I had great success using the free food tracker at http://www.sparkpeople.com - it helps you balance the amounts of fat/carbs/protein you eat which is really important for health, and if you put in your weight and goals it'll tell you how many calories you should be eating too. It's really helpful.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
