Only animal products foods/products contain cholesterol, plant foods do not. Dietitians always recommend a low fat, high fiber (though not necessarily a vegetarian) diet when a person suffers from high cholesterol.

As others have already mentioned, humans themselves produce their own cholesterol. A high in saturated fat diet , not a a high in meat one, helps contribute higher, unhealthy cholesterol levels.

Read this link from th American Heart Association: (notice that they don't outright say to remove ALL meats, just choosing low saturated fat ones. In fact they even recommend seafood AT LEAST twice a week)

Cholesterol is found only in animal products. Every living animal (including you) makes cholesterol. You need cholesterol. It's essential to the proper operation of your body.

There's actually no scientific research showing that eating foods high in cholesterol will lead to heart disease. It's all a big, fat lie.

From the link:

"Wide acceptance of the lipid hypothesis started back in 1954 when Ancel Keys' Seven Countries Study was published, demonstrating clear links between saturated fat intake and heart disease. The study, however, was seriously flawed in its methodology. While the seven countries selected graphed a clear link between saturated fat consumption and heart disease, the other 16 countries that Keys had looked at showed no such correlation. Keys simply discarded the data from the countries that didn't conform to his hypothesis. Keys, nonetheless, was treated as a hero, put on the cover of Time magazine as 'Man of the Year' in 1961 and the lipid hypothesis has dominated contemporary nutritional thought ever since. It's the dietary version of the IPCC Global Warming report.

I agree with Tom. Need to add the following to his list....

Have oats for breakfast top it with low-fat yogurt, flax seed (ground it fresh) or nuts or fruit.

Eat fatty fish because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids like sardines, mackerel, salmon

Have nuts - almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts - not salted or coated with sugar. Nuts are high in calories, so just a little will do, but replace foods high in saturated fat with nuts, e.g. instead of using cheese, meat or croutons in your salad, add a couple of nuts.

Cook with olive oil

Blackberries and any "dark / red fruit fruit" are great for lowering cholesterol as well as strawberries, apples, lemons & grapes

Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans are great as well.

Replace anything "white" in your diet.... white rice... use brown rice, use wholewheat pasta, white bread replace with wholewheat bread

EDIT: Forgot replace potatoes with sweet potatoes

Don't just be thinking about diet changes, although that is important too. You can also mitigate the bad cholesterol with natural supplements SAFELY. You don't have to take prescription drugs with the bad side effects! The one I take is called Cholestaflor, but there are others too. These are herbal and have no side effects, and can knock your bad cholesterol numbers down by 20% to 30%! If you combine the better eating WITH a natural supplement like Cholestaflor, you get a much greater effect . . .and no bad side effects (prescription statin drugs.) Ellen

Good replies so far--just a little trivia: Humans are animals and the only animals that actually absorb dietary cholesterol are rabbits and chickens. You don't get it from eating it, but you do make it from the saturated fats and sugar that you do eat.

Cholesterol comes from animals and animal by-products (like milk, eggs, cheese)

Vegetables are a good choice, as are berries, and whole grain breads, pasta, rice

Your body makes cholesterol. The levels in your body are mostly genetic.
Example: Grass and hay do not have any cholesterol.
Cattle eat grass and hay
Beef is high in cholesterol
