My pasta has white powder all over it?!

Question: My pasta has white powder all over it?
I have some pasta in the cabinet that I want to make for dinner the problem is that I have had it for a while now and the package does not have an expiration date on it. I have had it since the beginning of last year. How can I tell if it is expired or safe to eat?

I should have add- This pasta was a special kind that came out for a limited St. Patricks day pasta. So the pasta is colored greed and shaped like a 4 leaf clover. Should I say the pasta is mixed. So some is colored green while the other half is regular pasta color. I do see this kind of white powder stuff all over the pasta but I thought it was part of the pasta. I have no idea.

Answers:

It could just be semolina flour, BUT if the pasta is that old, check very carefully for little tiny weevils. As they hatch out of the old pasta and start eating it, it gets very powdery. You can also look for little tiny split open shells that are usually striped in appearance. Dried pasta does last a long time, but not forever. I just had a package of mushroom linguini infested with weevils hatch and invade almost all my dried goods in the same pantry. NOT a happy day!

It is, Have you ever cooked cheap mac n cheese or the Velveeta shells and cheese in the microwave? their is a noticeable amount of white "Powder" I believe it is to help prevent the pasta from sticking to itself.

Flour or Cornstarch to prevent sticking. The pasta is fine to eat

if its dried pasta it will stay good basically forever
