I'm assuming you mean one that's dark brown on the outside, not one that's straight off the tree.

First, use a hammer to drive an icepick or clean screwdriver through the eyes at the end, and drain the liquid into a bowl. You do NOT want to waste it; it's delicious. Then, you can use a very heavy cleaver, a clean machete, or a large, heavy sharp knife and hammer, to crack the orb. Then pry the peices apart with a butter knife or clean chisel; once it's cracked, you don't have to hammer it to death.

I've seen natives actually use nothing but a sharpened stick to crack one open from the "eye" end; they prop the stick upright between their feet, and smash the nut down on the sharp end. They take off the husk first with a machete.
