Cabbage is a lot tougher than lettuce making it good to cook. Lettuce isn't good for cooking at all.
They look a bit alike (iceberg anyway) but are two totally different vegetables with totally different tastes. Cabbage can be cooked but you cannot cook lettuce.
Tastewise, cabbage is sweeter when boiled.
