Does peanut butter need to be kept in the fridge once opened?!

Question: Does peanut butter need to be kept in the fridge once opened?
i always do but it's hard and difficult to spread it so was just wondering if it will stay ok in the cupboard

Answers:

i leave my peanut butter out of the fridge for months and it's still good to eat.

Our natural Whole Foods peanut butter is sitting on top of our fridge. It's there because it's convenient. We also use the Skippy Natural, which is also sitting on top of our fridge. We've been keeping it there for as long as we have lived here (two and a half years) and I even ate it through pregnancy (copious amounts, daily). I mix the Skippy with the Whole Foods when the Whole Foods peanut butter begins to dry out. I don't like it in the fridge because it's harder to spread. I hadn't even heard of putting it in the fridge until I started dating my husband. (While I mix the two brands, I like the Whole Foods better. It's got a much better taste.)

If it's a natural unhomogenized one, yes, it does unless you eat it within a couple of weeks or so. If the oil floats to the top at room temperature, it's a natural one. The oil will go rancid if it's out of the fridge too long after it's opened. And it will float to the top again and have to be remixed.

If your peanut butter is a "natural" peanut butter you need to keep it in the fridge. If it is not "natural" then you don't need to keep it in the fridge. A "natural" peanut butter doesn't have to be. I found a previously answered question here on Yahoo! Answers regarding peanut butter. Check it out. I have the site posted.

It depends on what kind it is. The kind you get from health food stores often needs to be refrigerated (as well as stirred *grumble*) Most kinds that you get from wal-mart and the like (Jif, Skippy, Peter-Pan) don't need to be refrigerated. Try checking the labels. If it doesn't say anything about refrigeration, it doesn't need to be refrigerated. If it does, then listen to what it says.

I don't put it in the fridge. It's impossible to spread if you do. Never,NEVER,lick a knife or spoon and put it in the peanut butter. This puts bacteria in the p.butter and it will spoil.

Natural peanut butter (ingredients peanuts and optionally salt) DOES need to be refrigerated

Processed peanut butter (most common brands) can be kept in the pantry

No, it has nothing in it that will spoil. It is just nuts basically. You can keep it out. Just make sure to keep lid tight.

NO .. You do not need to keep Peanut Butter in the fridge ..
It's OK to keep it in the cupboard if you use the open jar within a month or so.

Well you can at anytime leave the peanut butter out of fridge it as no harm to it doesn't affect it at all because all basically Is....
NUTS!
