Does eating meat mean you have no morals?!
Does eating meat mean you have no morals?
I was enjoying a pulled pork rib sandwich last week during my lunch break on the construction site. One of the building inspectors who was checking my work is a vegetarian. She needed to go over some building codes with me but refused to speak to me while I was still holding my sandwich. I asked her if it really bothered her that much and she said, "I have morals and I choose not to eat dead animals".
Is it just me or does this lady have a bad attitude? Was it right for her to make that remark to me?

Tina T and ausblue, you sound just like that lady. You think you can judge me just because I eat meat. Eating meat is normal, I shouldn't have to feel ashamed of something that is perfectly normal.

She's entitled to her opinion and if she finds your dead pig sandwich offensive, she has a right to make that known to you.
I expect she didn't want little bits of dead pig spluttered all over her nice building codes.
no
I've been a veggie for 17 years and can honestly say I don't care if other people choose to eat meat. It's up to you. She was being a silly billy and should live and let live.
What an idiot! Its her sort of comment that make us meat munchers "cheesed" off (unless you are a vegan) with vegetarianism!
Everyone to their own I say!
No, it's people like that that give us vegetarians a bad name.
I am a veggie myself, but I have no problem with anyone else eating meat, it's a personal choice. As long as people leave me to my decisions, I leave them to theirs.
As long as you were not spitting the sandwich all over me, I would have had no problem talking to you while you were holding it!
im a vegetarian and i couldnt care less who eats meat in front of me.everyone has a choice so yes, that woman does have a bad attitude.
You didn't give her the damn sandwich!! She's being up tight. She's one of those who tries to impose her beliefs on others, no matter how subtle. You on a lunch break for goodness sake. Whatever her beliefs are indicate that eating dead animals means you have no morals. You don't believe the same thing, so have extra meat next time with bacon on the side.
Well, some Buddists think that meat-eaters are spiritually higher than vegetarians because to eat meat, to have an animal die for your meal denotes that you must have very good karma. Good in theory, but not with you probably.
It does my head in when people preach their own morals. The way I look at it, the animals are only bread to be eaten. If we didn't eat them they wouldn't have even been born.At the end of the day it tastes great, she shouldn't have been so rude!
Firstly, you have your right to continute holding the sandwich, as last time i checked, it wasn't illegal to do so... and if she chooses not to go through the codes with you, that is by her choice (albeit a foolish one) she has no right to make that kind of remark, you aren't doing anything wrong. what a stupid woman.
Whatever she is a freak i mean the meat wasn't going to come alive and eat her, or was she afraid someone might see her near meat omg the scandal.People need to chill animals are here to be eaten not petted. I once saw a vegan projectile vomit in front of a whole room full of a strangers in a restaurant. Because his plate had come into contact with meat can u believe some people that's extrema. She was just rude I hope you ignored her till you finished eating.
She's crazy and mixed up. Trust me on that. I am swimming in health nuts all around me. I listen to their ridiculous premises. A health book in their hands is a menace to family and friends. They say eating meat is immoral. The hypocrite's! What about the poor little plants and veggies. They have feelings too. If they were really consistent with their stupid thinking, then they would say that eating anything organic is immoral. Then they would starve to death and we would be rid of them. Instead we have to put up with their hypocritical superior than thou ways. Sheesh, I eat meat proudly and make no apology for it.
No it doesn't I eat meat ..and my ..standards ..principles ..and morals are intact...
It's one thing to make a lifestyle choice for yourself.
It's even ok to try to inform people about your choice and educate them a little so they may come around to your way of thinking.
It's quite another thing entirely to consider yourself superior or self-righteous because of your decision.
.... I'd have slapped the silly cow! (Or do I mean non-meat cow substitute?)
I have a friend who's vegan, and I'm perfectly ok with her decision to be vegan, and she's perfectly ok with my decision to be a meat-eater, and we often talk about it with no heat or animosity or judgements either way. We both learn a little from our exchanges, and then move past it to talk about other things.
what she shoves in her mouth is her bussiness, not yours. and whats she doing interfering with your lunchbreak? doesnt she have a union?
my wife and daughter are veggie, myself and youngest daughter arent. wifey has been veggie for 20 odd years... and its my right to eat what i want, and her right not to. thats it.
i'd be more pi ssed off with her intterupting my lunch break. and her prefferences arent any of my concern.. she s a building inspector... not a moral investigator... tell teh witch to fork off.
and inform her you dont like dead meat either, you prefer it squirming and still alive on the plate. mmm rare steak, so rare a good vet would have it on its feet in 20 minutes.
we eat meat, thats why we have incisors.
and in her PC world, you can report her. she overstepped the mark and castigated you for your personal choice... you cant have a go at her for her choices, then why is she allowed to do it to you... stitch the witch.
Eating meat doesn't mean you have no morals. It means you have different morals than someone who chooses not to eat it for the sake of morality. Some vegetarians feel the need to have an elitist attitude and make others feel bad. It's a personal choice and you shouldn't have been insulted like that. I'd file a complaint.
yes!!! i hate cigarettes and i can't stand to smell them on people or have people blow smoke in my face or get in my car and light up a cigarette!! see what i'm getting at ? she just has strong beliefs and she is standing up for them it beats being 2 faced
Yes that's right. I had a steak for dinner last night and that makes me no better than a thief or a murderer.
Tell her to get a life. Does she also have a go at carnivorous animals? Our bodies are designed to eat and digest meat. I do wonder sometimes if humans higher intelect could be our undoing rather than the making of the species. We seem to question ourselves more and more and all it does is split people into tribes.
OOOps i'm going off on one, better shut up now
it is very sad for the poor animals
because they don't want to die just like we don't
To me i won't criticized another person's choice of food. Because food is about the intend of eating habit and diet plan. It's about personal mood and intent. No one have rights to make comment with another person's eating style.
It is bad attitude and you should not have been spoken to in that manner. Being a vegetarian is not a question of morals, it is a choice based on the love of animals and the decision not to eat them as part of their diet. My partner is a long time vegetarian and I respect her decision not to eat meat. She also respects my diet as a meat eater and will even buy and cook meat for me. She just chooses not to eat it. She does not pressurise me into becoming a vegetarian either. Your building inspector is displaying signs of vegetarian fascism, and what you could have done was to say to your inspector 'if my sandwich offends you please wait until I have eaten it and I will be right with you.' Vegetarians have got a bad name off attitude such as this, and don't do their cause justice. Anyway, she can't have any morals - she's a building inspector!
I'm vegetarian and have been since the age of 7 (I'm now 22). It doesn't bother me what other people eat (as long as they know the story behind it and are happy) - the majority of my family are meat eaters. On a personal level I don't believe animals are ours to eat or wear - we are not superior to animals, we are all on a level pegging.
Other vegetarians are not so complacent - many I know find it deeply offensive to 'see' meat. They will not tolerate being in the same room as someone when they are eating meat, some religious groups have a similar view. I guess it depends why someone has gone veggie. I despise meat because it is cruel, I also cannot touch it with my bare hands, nor can I eat something that has touched (e.g. cooking utensils) or been cooked with meat. It physically repulses me, yet my bro eating a chicken burger in front of me doesn't bother me.
What does infuriate me though is people who call themselves Christians and then sit down to tuck into a Sunday roast - what part of 'thou shalt not kill' do you not get? OR vegetarians who say eating meat is cruel and then parade around in leather shoes.
I dont think killing innocent animals for just having a good taste is good.
No the woman had no right to say that to you. That's like saying that you have morals because you have a certain religious belief and all others that do not have that belief are not moral.
If you look up the definition of morals "of, pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong", the woman holds her belief of not eating meat as to be "right". This is only her belief. Although she may have the right to determine what she considers moral she does not have the right to judge you or anyone else.
I am a vegetarian but I don't believe I have the right to force my beliefs onto anyone else. Although personally it is for health reasons... and not because I'm an animal activist.
Sometimes people swing too far to the right or the left in their beliefs and unfortunately you ran into a woman like this. You will find people in all walks of life who hold certain beliefs and standards and expect all of society to follow them. Thank goodness we are a society that can think and act for ourselves and that's exactly what you did.
No..it means you just don't have as many morals if this little story was even true. Since you insist on pretending to spend most of your time looking up medical journals, having vegan neighbors and all your other fantasies, nobody here really cares what your issues are.
alright, is this the same woman who said that you were a murderer? i think she just must feel very very strongly about her vegetarianism. you should ask her to please not preach to you.
she might have not wanted to be around you because if the smell/look/thought of meat. i know when im around meat i want to vomit so maybe that is how she feels. and no, eating meat does not mean you have no morals, you just have different ones than we do.
and now im just asking this, why does what this person say to you bother you so much? do you think that deep down you feel guilty about eating meat? or is it just the fact that she would be so rude to you what is buggin you?
but to give you a clear answer, that woman has a bad attitude. she has to learn to deal with the 95% of the population that are carnivores.
No! U don't seem to understand Vegetarianism! Have U Heard U ARE WHAT U EAT? I bet U have. Well what is meat.. it is dead animal! So it is Dead. What is dead is caused by death. So If U eat meat U are eating death. Vegetarians don't want to eat death &that's why they are vegetarians. Vegetables that are picked these do not die right away. When a vegetable dies it is spoiled it is no longer edible! Note there are vegetarians because they are animal lovers & those that merely don't like the sight of blood. I'm vegetarian 4 all these reasons not just one reason. If U want to eat Pork that's you're choice...that's up to U! Whatever works 4 U! I prefer to be vegetarian.. also I use to be a meat eater only because 's what I was served. I never really cared for taste of meat..it's gross to me...I don't see what's so great about it.. but my not liking taste of meat that's a minor reason 4 my being a vegetarian.. I told U reasons above. It was natural & right for me to become vegetarian! Vegetarianism works 4 me.. It's not 4 everyone!
i think most people do not see animals have pain feelings etc but they do it also releases bad hormones when being butchered sad urmil
Sounds like she wants attention if your asking me.
The reality of being vegetarian or vegan for moral reasons is that not everyone is going to agree with that point of view. Historically meat has been on the menu for survival purposes.
If she does it again I would make a point of being discriminated against because you choose a different life style. Her beliefs need to be set aside at the work place. After she is off the clock she can avoid meat eaters all she wants. During the work day that kind of behavior can be viewed as discrimination if you were both on the clock.
That pisses me off that people who claim to be vegan or vegetarian turn their noses at people. I have been a vegetarian for some time. As a matter of fact I got the third degree from a PETA member because, I was just vegetarian and not vegan. That really peaved me off. It was like I was considered less of a moral person because, I chose to have some dairy products in my diet. It's a real kick in the teeth when you were doing expensive volunteer work.
Any how, I would just observe whether or not you guys are on the clock and file a complaint if she continues to give you the third degree. People who do that have to realize that is really going to far. You don't change people's opinions by being unreasonable and rude.
What if she were a smoker and blew smoke in your face. You wouldn't keep quiet would you (being the retiring , shrinking violet sort that I know you are). Besides even if you were eating a plain salad sandwich without meat it would be manners to put it away in your lunch box whilst talking to someone wouldn't it??? It is a bit harsh to say no morals, no manners and maybe diverse morals but they are your look out!!
You know I always pictured you as a builder but not a real one. I pictured you with a Cowboy, a Sailor, an Indian, a leather clad biker-dude and a policeman showing people how to make giant letters up on Stage!!!
Hey, it's our Foxie -- the vegetarian and vegan magnet! How're things in Veganville these days? Wife and kiddies doing OK? I mean, other than having to fend off all the attacks by those vicious, nasty vegetarians, that is.
Foxie, honey, give it up. Move out of Veganville, change your identity, and go into the anti-vegetarian witness protection program. You'll be a lot happier when you don't have to deal with the hundreds of vegetarians with rotten attitudes that cross your path on a daily basis.
But until you can get yourself and the clan into the program, you might want to develop a slightly thicker skin. I realize that it may be difficult for you, but give it a try. Just ignore all those savage, insulting vegetarians who single you out from among the dozens and dozens of other guys eating baloney and salami sandwiches on their lunch break at the site.
Finish your meal, belch loudly, and then go over the codes with the lady. Believe me, she'll understand EXACTLY where you're coming from after that. . .just like the rest of us regulars here at the "Vegetarian and Vegan" section already do.
Problem solved.
Happy New Year, Foxie. You're the best show on Yahoo Answers. :-)
