What is the easiest way to change a families eating style to a healthy one?!

Question:

What is the easiest way to change a families eating style to a healthy one?

My husband and I have been talking about going to a mostly raw diet, something like 85% raw...we need to eat healthier and I need to drop some pounds. Any advice? We are not vegans or vegetarians...just want to cut down on bad for us foods. We do juice and want to do it a lot more. Receipes would be great also.

Answers:
just do it.

Just bring in these new foods gradually, don't change all at once. Start bringing in more vegetable and pasta dishes, such as stuffed peppers, pasta bake, potato bake. Also you could cut down on your intake of red meat and just stick to Chicken and then find different recipes that involve cooking with chicken.

Stir-fry's, spicy chicken pasta, etc

Good luck. I feel sorry for your kids. Humans have evolved to eat cooked food.
I mean, go ahead - eat carrots, strawberries etc. I won't say that's anything other than great for you, but I can't believe the work some people are willing to put themselves through. I'd rather spend an hour a day exercising and cooking than foraging.

Go slowly . .don't take it all out at once . . .

Juice is OK but you are not getting all the goodness from the fruit that way. Juice is all sugar if you are talking about fruit juice.

Include whole grains in every meal as well as a steamed vegetable. Get beans and nuts at least once a day and drink at least 6 cups of water.

look at a list of healthy foods and find things that you actually enjoy, then eat alot of the food you enjoy, for me I like vegg soup with noddles, and vegg pizza, so I eat that all the time, it contains pretty much all the nutes I need so I'm cool, plus the soup takes about 5 mins to make

doctors are great sources for nutrition. maybe you can talk to your doctor?

i know you said y'all arn't vegans or vegetarians but it never hurts you or the animals to drop meat all togeather. dropping meat will do wonders for you. you will shed pounds, you skin will be healthier, and you'll have more energy. also, right now the food network is doing recipies for new years resolustions of eating healthier. check out their website for those recipies. also, the other source link has some good healthy, hearty recipies. if all else fails, you can go to a book store get buy some cook books just for your situation.

good luck!

At first, focus on getting rid of junk rather than introducing new things.

Buy the best-quality produce you can afford. Find a good greengrocer. There's a lot of difference between tomatoes.

Grow some basic herbs on your windowsill -- chives, parsley, basil, and thyme are all good basics. Beats dried, and you'll need something to perk up the taste of the raw stuff.

Don't be afraid of fat. It's what makes food taste good. Get some good-quality oils; put some extra-virgin olive in a spray bottle, and spritz it on the above-mentioned tomatoes.

Don't force foods nobody likes just because they're healthy; it's a great way to end up with rebellion and furtive trips to McDonald's for a pig-out.

Get a blender.

Find a gazpacho recipe you like.

Peaches are excellent in a juicer; so's watermelon.

Start by trying to become more vegetarian--if you are going to continue eating meat, eggs, dairy--fo organic--then slowly cut out the meat--then the eggs--then the dairy--I am still eating dairy and once in awhile eggs--You don't have to do it all at once---and yes--going organic is costly--buying all the veggies etc...I am not fully there either--but joining a co-op where people help grow organic produce, etc..would be good too--becasue you start meeting others who can encourage you to live a more healthy lifestyle..

Also--if you start exercising more your body will naturally be happier with lots of water and healthy foods...you will crave good foods adn will not want to ruin your good feeling by eating junk...

Good luck--It's a wonderful choice for you and your family!!

Check out the Vegetarian section on AllRecipes.com. I went to eating mostly raw foods for a whole year. My favorite is dipping cucumbers or other veggies into hummus. Hummus itself is primarily vegetables and you can find recipes to make your own. I think I'm may be ready to go back to that soon. You will feel healthier eating a mostly vegetable diet. Whole grains are also important and you can make some amazing veggie sandwiches. Try avocado/cucumber with honey mustard on whole wheat. ; ) Have fun!

Changing your old eating habits is not easy and that is why I do not recommend a complete menu overhaul. Radical changes is why most people will fail to achieve their diet goals. Here are some basic tips that I recommend:

Food and Additive Replacement

- Replace butter with low fat substitutes
- Drink water with meals instead of milk or soda
- If oils are absolutely needed, use those with unsaturated fats
- If you need to drink milk, drink skim milk
- Do not add butter to meal in a box recipes, replace with skim milk
- Use ground turkey, venison, or no meat in marinara sauces
- Try using a little more pepper instead of salt
- Use garlic powder instead of garlic salt

Volumetrics

- Eat foods with high volume and low calories
- Fruit such as apples, peaches, plums, melons etc
- Vegetables such as lettuce, tomatoes etc
- Water
- Water down juices, when making juice from frozen concentrate, increase the added amount of water by 50-100% and you will barely taste a difference

Restaurant Choices

- Order the Sirloin instead of the Ribeye or New York Strip, it is cheaper, healthier and tasty
- Leave the sour cream off the baked potato or ask for low fat alternatives, they will often have a light sour cream or butter
- Choose the marinara, wine or lemon sauces instead of the heavier alfredo
- Choose the lighter salad dressing
- Why not try the fish dish?

Cooking Options

- Get rid of the deep fryer, try baking your french-fries, most store bought fries are made to be baked
- Don't pan fry, bake, broil or barbeque instead
- Use olive, corn or canola oils

Good luck to you and your family!

Slowly start introducing new healthier food during meal times and subsituting it with healthier stuff early on. This will get easier as it goes on. It's a good method to use.
