Why do vegans and vegetarians want to imitate animal products?!

Question:

Why do vegans and vegetarians want to imitate animal products?

They made their decision.

There are plenty of choices available without having to imitate cheese, milk, eggs, and meat. Most of those soy products taste horrible anyways.

Yeah, like vegan cheese, sour cream, egg replacer, ice cream, gravy, and all those meat 'alternatives'.

Because Western cooking is so revolved around meat and animal products, having imitations allows us to use the same recipes as meat eaters. And since most people don't grow up veggie/vegan, they've aquired a taste for this stuff already.

Instead of having to completely re-think most every breakfast, lunch and dinner, these products allow people to enjoy the foods they are used to, that are customary in our culture, without having to actually eat animal products, if they have decided that they do not wish to support the meat industry for ethical reasons, or if animal products just disagree with them (some people are only veggie for health reasons)

Think about what you'd have to give up if you went vegan. Daunting isn't it? You can't bake a cake w/o eggs, you can't eat a pizza, normal pasta, milk chocolate... A lot of people who want to do it can't- they can't think of anything they could actually eat and enjoy anymore- these products allow them to make a smoother transition.

As for them tasting horrible, well I agree with you there! But each to his own- some people like it!

Surely everyone's a winner here?

<>You mean like Tofurkey? Yes, I don't get that either. They eschew meat products but want veggie "burgers" and tofu "turkeys." So, what's the point? You want meat shaped/flavored products, then EAT MEAT! It's way better!

actually, in my opinion soy milk is really good haha
but i dunno about the other products.
AND vegans dont eat animal products...so they dont eat eggs..milk..cheese
the soybean is healthy and nutritious
without meat and dairy..they are lacking many nutrients so they have to get it from somewhere!
- to the above commenter: how ignorant are you?
im not vegetarian or vegan but i can understand where they are coming from. animals are beings too, and they deserve to be left alive.
damnit.

My family eats mainly vegetarian. Like you said, there are many excellent dishes from mainly cultures that are far more apetizing and interesting. They are however usually far more time consuming to make. What is easier then a simple meat/veg/potato meal? It's also easier when accomodating a vegetarian at a meal with non-vegatrians.The easiest way for a vegetarian is to use the "fake" products. My kids (late teen and 20s) are more likely than me to eat them.

Im a vegetarian, Not vegan, and i use meat immitations for a few reasons, one, to bulk up stir fries, tofu when marinated soaks up flavour really well. two, for the vitamins that are missed out on by not eating meat. And three, sometimes you just dont feel like vegies, so having some vegetarian nuggets and chips is an easy option thats tastes fine, and adds variety to your diet. :)

Vegetarians never implied that they did not like the taste of meat but the source of the meal. Why not still get the same great taste but from a different source? It's like when people use sugar and salt substitutes.

they dont want to let go of the aspect of eating modern foods like hot dogs and burgers so they use things like mushed up veggies instead of meat....i know no offense but itz like losing a family member 4 them...i think...good luck with ur survey

Go have a Boca burger at Red Robin and then tell me it tastes horrible. The new generation of meat imitation products are really tasty. To answer your question, because most of us were not born into vegetarianism, we became vegetarians at some point in life, so we still crave that taste we gave up. If you can have the same taste without killing a lovely animal, why wouldn't you?

Most vegetarians and vegans grew up eating meat. They're used to cooking certain dishes that normally use meat. I find that Morningstar products make the best substitutes because of their taste, texture, and appearance. I use meat substitutes in dishes that I made before I started not eating meat. I also provide my mom and grandmother with meat substitutes when they want to accommodate my eating habit. I don't make much of a habit of eating these products anymore, because I noticed that I put on a few pounds when I eat them. I also don't know what a lot of the ingredients are in the products. Basically though, these products help people that are in transition learning how to accommodate their new chosen diet. They're also good for lazy people too.

Oh, I almost forgot...some people have to cut cholesterol out of their diets as much as possible, and so they are forced to limit their meat intake, and so the substitutes are also for people that didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

Some people want the taste still.

I don't eat the mock meats, but from time to time I'll have a baked potato with Tofutti Better Than Sour Cream. I never liked eggs so I've never tried to imitate them. Soymilk is needed for baking things, along with an egg replacer (I use cornstarch and water).

And who are you to judge considering you probably aren't even a vegetarian or vegan in the first place?
