Does anyone have any tips on avoiding processed foods??


Answers:
Buy vegetables. Fresh, canned and frozen. Having them readily available will make cooking much easier.

Fresh - onions, bell peppers, garlic, potatoes
Canned - beans, corn, leafy greens, peas, string beans
Frozen - Spinach

Buy grains, such as brown rice, spelt, couscous

Have chicken thighs or breasts and fish in the freezer. You can buy them in 2 pound packages.

With these foods available, you won't have the need to buy processed foods!

Processed foods are much less expensive than fresh foods, so expect your grocery bill to increase.

Avoid organic fruits and vegetables. They go bad a lot quicker, and you house will be filled with fruit flies.

Finally, as simple as it sounds, don't buy processed foods. Avoid the deli meats, canned meats, pastas, etc.

If you want chicken, buy chicken from the meat department not the frozen breaded, cooked chicken nuggets, fingers, etc. Don't eat too much lunch meat or wieners, eat real potatoes not the formed French fries and tater tots, watch the amount of snack food you eat. Have carrots (you can peel them yourself), celery, apples, bananas, cheese (not a lot of American or Velveeta). Fresh is the opposite of processed. It's more work, but I think it's healthier to try to avoid foods that have added flavors and preservatives.

shop at organic stores like Trader Joe's, Whole Food's, or M.O.M's. If you have never heard of these stores, or dont live near one, there is probably organic sections in your local super market, or ask around, there might even be a small organic store in your neighborhood.

Just don't buy anything processed. Get some cookbooks and learn to cook dishes from sratch. Always buy wholegrain foods and fresh fruit and veg. I have to be on a natural diet due to intolerance to yeast and sugar, and it's very easy once you get used to it.
