Should I be a vegan?!
Should I be a vegan?
I became a vegetarian when I was four and found out where meat came from. At the time I was the only one in my family. I don’t eat meat or wear leather. I avoid gelatin as much as possible although it gets hard being that it is everything from pills to lucky charms to photographs. But I do eat dairy. I know some animal cruelty does exist in milk and egg production so I buy cage free eggs and organic or soy milk, but I buy products that I’m sure were made with normal dairy products. Is it hypocritical to support animal rights if I use these products? Vegans, what is your reason for avoiding even cage free eggs? Does some cruelty still exist, or is it the idea of eating basically a chicken's period? As a vegetarian, I use eggs as a way to fulfil nutritional voids so I was wondering if there is a reason I don't know about.
Answers:
Personally, I never particularly liked eggs, so dropping them was no big deal. Also, by the time that I became vegan, as opposed to lacto-ovo vegetarian, I had already dropped most dairy products from my diet. Honey was a once in a while thing, so that didn't bother me, either.
Of course, being vegan makes it somewhat more difficult to find places and things to eat when you're out and about, but it is possible. Your local vegetarian society, chapter or whatever can help you here. And such organizations do exist.
If you are eating from a wide group of goods, then you shouldn't need eggs to "fill a nutritional void". I'm giving you a book title that will help to better explain vegan nutrition.
Ultimately, though, the choice is yours to make. The only suggestion that I have is that you make a decision that allows you to be at peace with yourself.

I'm not a vegan, but I do not think it is hypocritical. It is a natural process, for example, for a hen to lay eggs. As long as the chicken is being treated humanely, why should it matter if you eat the eggs? They would go to waste otherwise.
I have known a few vegans and they were woman that got pregnant. The doctors told them they HAD TO HAVE PROTEIN IN THEIR DIET OR THERE CHILD WOULD BE EFFECTED. They both choose two different proteins that they ate during their pregnancies. I think that should show you that protein in essential in a human beings diet. Eggs, cheese, milk, cottage cheese, etc would provide those proteins without eating meat.
Drink milk ok and dont always isten to PETA or those liars because guess what? We Pasturize milk now and milk is good for you ok
Cruelty exists but then again everyone could go out hunting for their food and people just dont have time. Eggs are ok because other animals eat meat and since we are animals we have the ability to do this also. Vegans are just afraid of what they used to here has changed and its not always what it seems. The French buy their food fresh unlike us and that might be a better idea so spread that idea
Yes of course cruelty still exists in the so-called "cage free" eggs! Go here: http://www.peacefulchoices.com/free-rang...
As for dairy, I personally am of the opinion that cows milk is designed for a calf's body, not a humans. The idea of drinking something that was secreted by another, very non-human species is just odd if you think about it. I believe that dairy products are extremely unhealthy for human consumption. Would lactose intolerance be so widespread if we were really ment to be drinking this stuff? Ever heard of a lettuce or an apple intolerance?
I do think you should at least give veganism a try.
But thank you sincerely for all that you do already. You rock. :)
i'm vegan, hardest thing to give up is cheese and eggs
but in my book egg is unborn chicken so it's animal, it's meat to me, as for free range chicken, they're not treated well, cruelty exsist, the farm workers are paid very little, and is always rushed to do the work, and chickens get hurt
Free Range doesn't mean much, so please do the research on the web about "cage-free" and "free range". Being vegan means in every way you can you try not to take part in the exploitation of animals. Hearing people use waste as an excuse to eat eggs is so sick. Females pass blood material monthly as their egg(s) deteriorate. Guess what, that's what a chicken is doing when they lay unfertilized eggs. It doesn't take much of a brain to realize these things aren't made for humans. Just because we have eaten them for so long doesn't mean we were designed to. You don't have to look to hard to figure out what the most evil things you can eat health wise are: oils and fat(worst from meat & milk products), red meat(risk far outweighs any benefit), and eggs(duh). How many vegetables, fruits, or grains have this level of risk. How many animals are used to bring you your milk/cheese/eggs? Even with "cage free", they still grind up the baby male chicks, they still kill them for food 8-12 years short of their average life span. Laying hens are sent to be slaughtered once they are unuseful, no matter how "nice" they treated them while they were forcing them to make eggs.
"Should I be a vegan? "
- Yes.
"I know some animal cruelty does exist in milk and egg production"
-Some?
"so I buy cage free eggs and organic or soy milk"
- This has nothing to do with the cruelty inherently part of egg and dairy production. Animals die for milk and eggs too.
"Is it hypocritical to support animal rights if I use these products?"
- Personally I think it's hypocritical to use any animal products that you can easily avoid and support animal rights. Obviously some people disagree.
"Vegans, what is your reason for avoiding even cage free eggs? Does some cruelty still exist..."
- Because the term "cage free" essentially means nothing legally. Even if the animals were indeed cage free, they are not, they would be killed after their egg production waned. There are no retirement villages for spent hens or dairy cows. They are slaughtered just the same.
"As a vegetarian, I use eggs as a way to fulfill nutritional voids "
- This is completely unnecessary, a Vegan diet is perfectly adequate. Read: Becoming Vegan.
Do a google search for info regarding your question, or look up some Vegan information. There are plenty of reasons to avoid any animal products that you possibly can. Visit www.veganfreaks.com There is some great info on this website.
Of course you should be a vegan! everybody should! being a vegan is keeping your body a never ending fitness you know?
From an early age you had an exceptional empathy with animals! You do not say how old you are now, but guess it has been a few years on from that time. Yes , I am vegan, but my choice of lifestyle has nothing to do with my views of animal treatment. In "the good old days" chickens roamed the farm or backyard and pecked in non polluted with chemical grass, the same as cows roamed all day in fresh paddocks. Elderly people quote how things tasted better then. In all our hurry to make our life richer, scientists have poisoned the grasses with additives, penned in the chickens, pigs, cows etc. to control their environment to make ours better, yet they suffer in unnatural conditions and we seem to have more illnesses than years gone by. Only you can do what you feel is right to do , and it is not hypocritical if you care, which is more than most people
Most of your points are covered above, but I would just like to alert you to a company called Vertese.
They make gelatine-free capsules of all kinds of supplements if you're concerned about anything lacking in your diet.
If your doctor prescribes you a medication, check that it is in tablet form not capsule. If you make it clear to a doctor that you absolutely won't take something in gelatine capsules, they should be able to find you an alternative. Mind you, you then have to consider that any medication you'll be taking will have been tested on animals, and that just opens a whole other can of worms!!
