Is fish a meat?!

Question:

Is fish a meat?

I am a vegitarian, but I heard that 'fish is a muscle, not a meat' I have been eating fish occasionally but not, like, every day. I need good long answers!

Answers:
Fish is a meat if you consider the flesh of an animal to be meat. It really is just semantic when you start weighing muscle versus fat, etc. The real issue is whether fish is okay for you to eat based on your reasons for being vegetarian. Many people that call themselves vegetarians regularly consume fish and other seafood, but many abstain from all animal products including dairy and eggs. Incidentally, if you are a true vegan, you need to take a B vitamin supplement as these are only available from animal sources. Good luck.

Yes. It is not plant life.

No fish is not meat.. it does not have blood and is not considered meat..

definitely meat

If it bleed it is a meat!
But it good for you to eat!!!
Taste great!!!

fish has a brain, it has eyes, it moves easily, it has no shell. + it is soft it IS in fact meat just not red meat.

remember the main food groups. Animal, mineral or vegetable.

If the food source comes from an animal it is considered a meat. I don't understand why people refuse to go and eat a hamburger because it was cute lil cow at one time but will deplete the oceans of fish and then somehow justfy that. Either your going to eat animals or your not going to eat animals.

Of course. Meat is flesh, whether it be cow flesh, lamb flesh, or fish flesh. Its all the same.

Yes, as a rule any organic that produces blood in it's system is a meat any that produce other liquid are plants and appropriate for strict vegan lifestyle. If you are vegetarian fish is not on the approved diet but if you like it there is no law that says you can't enjoy it from time to time. Good Luck!

That is pure nonsense. meat IS muscle. (the fat, and bones you get on many cuts isn't the meat.). Some vegetarians claim that fish is a vegetarian food, but I can't really see how that works.

yes. many "vegitarians" still eat chicken and fish for some unexplained reason, like killing a chicken/fish/clam/whatever is somehow more humane than killing a cow. makes no sense to me. and last time i checked, muscles are meat too. thats what you eat when you eat cow. you eat the muscles.

I suspect that whoever told you that fish is just muscle was referring to (or misunderstood a reference to) oysters and mussels and suchlike. But regardless, a muscle is a part of a creature. And a part of a creature is meat.

Some easy rules of thumb:
If it had a face, it's meat.
If it had a mother, it's meat.
If it had blood, it's meat.
If it had a central nervous system, it's meat.

So yes, fish is meat.

of course, while many people still claim to be veges and eat fish. it still has a heart beat. its has flesh and bones.

Yes it is meat but if you eat it or not depends on why you are a vegetarian or what type of vegetarian you are. Check out this web page and you'll get a full history on vegetarianism. Hopefully it'll help you decide if you should eat fish or not.

Fish is considered an animal NOT a plant, therefore, it's flesh is considered meat. Incidentally, plants do not have muscle of any kind.

Even if you meant "mussel", that would be shellfish....and therefore MEAT.

hmm dont think so

'Fish is a muscle'? I like that :)

Strictly speaking, vegetarians do not eat any living creatures, including fish, reptiles, mollusks etc. If you do include fish in your diet, you should call yourself a pescetarian. That's about it.

Yes, the animal was alive, then eating it is eating meat.
I am in the same 'boat' as you, having given up other types of meat, but still eating occasional seafood. There isn't a term for this type person, but we are not 'true' vegitarians.
All 'meat' is muscle, unless you are eating another organ such as liver.

Yes, fish is a meat however there are certain types of vegetarians (some call them Pescetarians, others simply call them Vegetarians) that choose to eat fish anyway as a source of several of the same things that meat and poultry has (iron, zinc, and vitamin B).

where in the world are you from? fish is meat. it is not a vegetable.

Does fish grow in the GROUND ?? No... okay it's NOT a plant then is it ?? Yikes some are rather dense...

and for the young lady who says "it doesn't bleed"... dear YOU have obviously never been fishing or had to prepare fish... fish are a BLEEDING MESS !!

In fact fish is considered as white meat. By the way the red meat is also a muscle.

You are not a vegetarian if you eat fish. A fish is an animal. A fish breathes, sees, bleeds and feels pain.

its not a muscle is not a meat..
get this definition for you.

"Any of various mostly cold-blooded aquatic vertebrates usually having scales and breathing through gills"

I'm accurate in telling you that you are not a vegetarian. you are a meateater who restricts thier meat intake to fish.

Its as simple as that.

Vegetarians don't eat fish. Ever

when will all these fish eaters learn ?

check out dictionaries, check out the world authorities on vegetarinism - www.vegsoc.org.uk, www.ivu.org.
Even check out the Wikipedia link above if you like. At the end of the first paragraph it says fish eaters are not vegetarians.

I get the impression they would still say they were vegetarians if everyone else ( all 6 Billion of us ) said they were wrong. none of them ever say "oh, i didn't know i was wrong, thanks i'll correct myself from now on"

Are vegetarians so great that you are willing to lie and be dishonest with yourselves and other just to try to be in our group ?

And don't even start me on the veggies eat chicken discussion....

Please check this link to the Vegetarian Society website - it says clearly that fish is meat.

Uh...yea. Did you know eating fish puts mercury into your body?
Eating a muscle sounds even more gross than eating meat.
If you must...You are not supposed to eat fish that doesn't have fins or scales either. (like catfish, whales, sharks, eels, octo, etc.) Let's stick with no meat. Live and let live. :)

meat is usually considered like poultry and pork and beef n stuff
I am vegetarian but I eat fish & shellfish

Meat is muscle as well.
