Check out www.peta.org. I joined them. I also checked out local health food stores and cafes to find similar minded people and get ideas. Later I joined the Green Party. You can search on the web or in bookstores for more info. Finding a vegetarian friend would help you a lot. I like to go to record shops and vintage clothing stores. You can find those kinds of people there too.
I was a vegetarian for several years (until I started athletics in HS and felt like I needed more protein than I was getting). Do your research on the various protein types, and how to get the proper combinations of these. It's doable, by all means, but a lot more thought has to go into it when you're a veggie. It's not as simple as just eating garden burgers if you want to stay healthy on this diet.

When I was younger I read a book entitle Diet for a New America. It was written by John Robbins, I think. It helped me with the transition to becoming a vegetarian. I am no longer a vegetarian. I was a vegetarian for over 14 years.
I'm flexitarian (part-time vegetarian) and I eat very little meat and less every time I find vegetarian food that I like. So I guess my advise is to find vegetarian things that you like and substitute them. Go flexitarian first and then transition slowly.
There are diff. types of vegetarians. Some eat dairy products some not. Some eat fish some not.
Very important that you know what types of foods supply the energy you need as you are changing from a meat protein to other. When I tried this without knowing I became very weak and tired. You have to have a good source of protein.

The more you read up on it and communicate with a good mentor the healthier you will be. Also, be careful if you have other health issues or are taking medicine as you may have to compensate for somethings in your diet. I don't mean to scare you out of this - just be cautious. I know if you look at some animal rights groups they have info on this subject and you may find some good help there or at a very old reputable health food store.
It's not too hard to a vegetarian. If you eat right, you'll do fine. Stick with basic protein sources such as beans, nuts, tofu, tempeh, tvp and seitan. The meat subsitutes can be great and all, but they are best in moderation. There are so many ways to cook tofu. Some people are against it, but I assure you this is because they haven't had tofu cooked the right way. Deep fried tofu isn't super healthy, but it is sure to please. Baked Tofu is really good also. Scrambled tofu is really easy and a great egg subsitute if you aren't into eggs or are vegan. I can't really think of a lot of good tips. I just jumped into vegetarianism and never looked back. If you love fruits and vegetables, it's great. If you don't, you may have a problem.

Quit eating meat.
You should probably do it over time. Cut out the red meats first, then chicken, then pork, then everything else. Go to PETA's websites even if you don't like PETA. They have tons of info, especially GoVeg.com. Also, you can't eat fish when you're a vegetarian, and you can't eat gelatin, which is in most Jell-Os, yogurts, marshmallows, fruit snacks and altoids.
If you're going to do it, then do it properly! Do some research, make the decision and if you can, do it in one go. Don't try cutting down a bit because the temptation will always be there to just have one more bit of chicken, or a bit of fish etc. If you are doing it on principle (ie because of the animals) then every time you are tempted just think of the animal being murdered. If you're doing it for your health, make sure you are getting a balanced diet and concentrate on how much better you should be feeling in yourself.

Look for local vegetarian support groups.
Visit some potlucks. Take at least 1 vegan
item and sample some food that vegetarians

If you totally give up meat, have a medical
checkup every six months until you feel
comfortable and assured by your doctors
that you're not missing any essential
nutrients. Doctors can help you perfect
a vegetarian diet.
Try not to overdue any one source of
non-meat protein. Soy, Nuts, Dairy,
and eggs should all be limited.
Take a supplement that includes vitaminb,
iron and zinc. This will help you avoid
methionine deficiency.
Try all of the meat substitutes. They taste just as good as the real thing. I especially reccomend Quorn. It's delicious. Stick to it, it gets easier after a couple of months.
