Making a boca burger taste better?!
Making a boca burger taste better?
I am a vegetarian, and I love boca burgers. However, I do find that they need a little extra something to make them taste better. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a meal out of a boca burger, without too many calories??? Thanks!
Answers:
I just add lettuce, tomato and ketchup. I've also topped with different cheeses to add a bit of flavor. You can try anything, boca's are very yummy.
And to the groucho....we like the flavor of boca, she didn't say a thing about making it taste more like meat. Just different ideas on making it taste better. geez...
You could top it with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard. It sounds boring, but it is added flavor and the calories shouldn't be bad.
I like to use shredded carrots mixed with a little ranch dressing to top off the burger...it sounds strange I know...but I promise it's good.
Cook it in a little soy sauce and mushrooms, throw a bit of cheese and add top it off the way you like burgers.
how about just enjoying your veggies and not dressing them up to look and taste like meat? you don't see me asking how I can mold a ground beef patty into the shape of a celery stalk and dye it green without losing any of the fat and cholesterol do you? I don't get you people.
How about using herbs as a seasoning mix and add onions if you like them?
Just because the Boca burger already comes shaped doesn't mean you can't put herbs in it and reshape it.
You can also grill it as well as fry or microwave.
They other ideas for topping are good and you can use a favorite mustard also. I think they are good when eaten on a whole wheat bun or in a pita bread.
I love boca burgers as well. I usually keep a bowl of my fresh salsa in the fridge...black beans, corn, chopped tomatoes, chopped green onions, garlic, jalapeno and cilantro (it tastes better the longer it sits in the fridge). I top a boca burger with some of the salsa and a sprinkle of cheese. The salsa is great on toasted pita as well. Another thing I love is crumbling up the burgers and adding it to spaghetti sauce and serve it with pasta. Barbecue sauce is good too. Hope that helps!
I just top mine with a little mushroom sauce or gravy from time to time. It makes a nice salisbury steak alternative.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I do like Boca burgers (I also serve them as a vegetarian option). If you're not sticking with "strictly" vegan, you could add a strong cheese (bleu cheese or feta are among my favorites), which add alot of flavor and aroma. As a bonus, the cheese (the amount you'd put on a burger) won't add an unacceptable number of calories (or fat).
Even if you're talking strictly vegan (the cheese would be a no-no), you can use any and all sorts of vegetables. Try some slices of red onion, which will add flavor AND crunch AND color. Instead of plain iceberg lettuce, try raw spinach, arugula, watercress, or other greens. They'll add a (small) nutritional boost, as well as additional flavor.
Ketchup is sort of traditional, but how about some whole-grain mustard (again, flavor plus a little texture)? Or one of my favorites: chipotle-flavored Tabasco sauce!
I forgot something important: if you're using an outdoor grill, you can "flavorize" the burgers that way, too. First, make sure the grill is pretty hot. Brush one side (or both sides, if you're feeling industrious) of the burger with ketchup (or tomato paste diluted with a little water, OR vegetable juice). Grill the burger for just two or three minutes per side (it's already cooked, anyway. Just needs to be heated through). The ketchup will caramelize, and you'll have cool-looking grill marks on the burgers, plus a nice BBQ flavor.
Well, when I eat Boca Burgers I usually put it between two slices of white bread, and top it off with diced tomatoes, bellpeppers, onions, and bean sprouts. Then, I use A1 Steak sauce or ketchup... but I don't know if that'll please your palette. =/
I dress mine up just like a normal burger: baby spinach, peppers, onions, pickles, whatever other veggies I have that sound good. And I love Jack Daniels bbq sauce!
There are several websites like Vegan essentials and
Pangea that carry vegan cheese and vega-naise. You
might also try putting grilled or roasted portabella
mushrooms on top of the bocca burger. Topping one
with spinach, chard, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes
is another great option. If you don't like mayonaise or
vega-naise you might want to try spreading hummus
across it or using a tahini based salad dressing.
I shoudl also mention that bocca burgers can
be broken up and added into convenience entrees made
by companies that carry vegetarian food. Some examples
are Amy's, Dr. Sears Zone, Moosewood and Green Guru.
Hope that helps. Good Question.
Guacamole makes for a very nice burger spread, although it goes better with veggie burgers and not the soy fake meat ones.
sometimes I'll make pasta and use either a marana sauce, or an alfredo sauce. I then add cooked and chopped Boca Burger to the pasta! Top that with some cheese, and some basil/parsley and you've got a good meal!
i turn my boca burgers into ketchup burgers!
but also get some of those pizza burgers from morning star, they are awsome...not vegan friendly tho.
Well, there's always the classic ketchup and onion burger, which I'm only rementioning because that's how I eat it.
A positively delicious non vegan (and a bit unhealthy, but still great) boca burger is one with swiss or mozzerella cheese, mayonaise, and sauteed (or grilled, maybe?) mushrooms.
For a healthier burger, you can try salsa, guacamole, and onions. This is also good with tomato and lettuce.
For a boca meal- here's a whole yummy list of all kinds of strange ideas. http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/searc...
ANd if you just want things to serve with it, try having a whole veg barbecue! COleslaw, corn on the cob, and chips are all good things to serve with boca burgers.
I prefer Morningstar Farms Grillers Prime burgers myself...
I make them taste wonderful by adding sauteed mushrooms or fresh avacado slices. That's in addition to all the regular burger condiments (mayo, mustard, bbq, lettuce, etc).
I also prefer to cook them in the oven. I find frying them often overcooks the outside layer, making it taste bad. They're also good grilled on the bbq.
