Vegetarians and Vegans: Do you crave meat?!

Question:

Vegetarians and Vegans: Do you crave meat?

Just wondering. I was reading up on it and it appeals to me for a couple of reasons (animal cruelty for one, and then weight loss for me) but I have to admit to myself that I would be going absolutely nuts without being able to eat meat.

Answers:
When I first became a vegetarian (I was for about ten years, but am no longer), at first I did crave it. The smell of bacon would drive me crazy.

However, it gradually changed to where even the smell of meat was unpleasant.

Not at all. When you don't eat it, you don't crave it.

Not at all, not even at first.

The only thing I miss is my mom's meatloaf... but I think that's just a psychological thing, the memory of the whole family meal and togetherness thing...

But then again, I hardly ate meat, and never really liked the taste when I did eat it.

I did when I was pregnant, but that's probably not unheard of. After all, some women eat chalk and wood chips when they're pregnant! :) Seriously though, it was hard getting back on track after that because people would assume I'd eat meat and cook it for me or choose non-veg. friendly restaurants. But under normal circumstances I'd say no, I don't crave meat.

absolutely not, i find meat disgusting. i could understand new vegetarians/vegans missing meat, but i have been a vegetarian for a long time and could not imagine eating meat. bleh.

When I first became a vegetarian I did, but now I can't stand it, plus I never liked the smell of my mom's meatballs so I'm not really missing out on anything at home HA HA.

It is a craving for familiar food that comforts you, not necessarily food that your body needs. Otherwise why would we crave mint and chocolate chip ice cream? Sorry I don't know how you would banish a meat craving (fake meat perhaps?) but at least you can rest assured it is a psychological craving, not a physical one.

at the beginning of your transition it is a little hard but after a wile you get used to not having it

I found that the first few weeks after I went vegetarian, whenever I was watching tv, there were always these commercials on that had a big juicy steak close-up in the picture. Of course, the commercial was using all of its marketing tools to make it appealing, and sometimes I kept thinking to myself "Why do you want meat? You don't even like meat" whenever I saw one of those commercials.

After being vegetarian/vegan for a while, it really becomes a hassle to even think about cooking with meat. I enjoy tasty meals 24/7 and if I have survived this long without eating meat, then it must not be worth it. There are much more interesting and delicious meals out there than a chicken breast or a steak.

Rotting animal flesh? Yuck!!!!!

I have been a vegetarian for around 2 months. And yes I must say that sometimes I do crave meat. But I just remeber why I am a vegetarian, and then I dont crave it anymore. Plus I have learned that if I am craving meat it generally means that I havent gotten enough protein, so I eat some nuts or something.

And honestly after a week or two you will get into a routine and you wont even think of meat, or at least I didnt. It just becomes normal after a while.

Good luck and if you want more info on vegetarianism try www.veggie123.com, it has tons of great info on vegetarianism.

no not at all. the smell of meat drives me nuts-because i hate it.

At first you may, but with time if you are in it for the ethics, it will quickly become disgusting. You start seeing the meat for what is really is pig's back, chicken's wings, a turkey's leg, chicken menstration(egg) cow breast excretion (milk) {And people say "Ewww" when they think about breast milk from a human?}

I tried a vegetarian diet for about a year. There are a lot of falsehoods in the PC world about the subject. There is no evidence that being a vegetarian is more healthy than someone who eats no red meat and eats a healthy diet. The human digestive system is meant to be omnivorous. There is a reason vegans usually look like extras from a Dracula movie.

Vegetarians eat eggs abd diary and are therefore vegetrians in name only (VINO), so they probably don't crave meat - they eat plenty of animal fat, et cetera. Maybe some vegans crave meat, but I don't and I've been vegan for about 11.5 years.

I cry everynight over the animal cruelty stuff
I only crave meat when someone eats meat that smells verygood, I cover my nose and walk away.

I never feel better

a dead animal in my mouth has never been some thing that i really enjoyed that much.

all the time
sometimez we try a little too

no, i have no interest in eating any meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products

meateaters claim we crave meat, itts a myth - i don't know why they continually say this

the need/desire and craving to eat meat is just a phycological feeling driven into you by society. Some people find it impossible to envisage a meal without a meat centrepiece. moving to a vegetarian diet will free you from this narrowmindedness and open up a whole new world of great tasting food.

me: veggie for 27 yrs

Never, But I didn't like the smell of cooking flesh from a very young age, and as soon as I could choose myself what I could eat, bingo! no more meat. I can truly say never once have I ever had desire to eat flesh again.

Yes, and we quench that craving (?) by eating tofu versions of the food. I?TVP!

But some foods I hate, cause I hate the smell of burning flesh. Especially bacon. And I never really liked tuna or ham.

my personal reasons for becoming a veg were more out of distaste for meat, so not so much, buuuuttttt....

there are a lot of good meat substitutes out there that are also high-protein, so transition is actually pretty easy if you check out what Boca and Morningstar have. good luck!

I have to say I have never craved meat (I became a vegetarian when I was ten and a vegan at fifteen - I'm now eighteen) - for me a craving only really takes hold if there's a possibility that I could have it (I once had a major craving for a certain brand of sweets but when I went to check if I could have them and realised they weren't vegan, instantly turned off).

Like most of the people above, when I see meat my association isn't "food" but "rotting animal carcass" (in my mind, anyway!). Slightly less appetising when it is thought of from that perspective, especially when you add to that the conditions that the animal probably endured whilst still alive.

Experiment with the alternatives would be my advice - some are better for others. I'm completely hooked on soya products (and so are most of my vegan friends), but some people prefer the "obviously not meat" taste (i.e. nut cutlets, nut roast - now I think about it I've got a craving for those too!) whilst others find other fake meats - when I was a vegetarian I lived off the Quorn range. If your sources of veggie protein are adequate then you may not even need a substitute (unless to fill out a meal a bit more).

yeah you still crave it for a few years but it should stop eventually and you cant always loose weight when you're a vegetarian
i no a lot of people who gained weight. you should do it to be healthy you no meat can cause cancer.......

No, the thought of eating meat disgusts me. I crave it no more than you would crave eating something off of Fear Factor. I don't even think of meat as food. The smell is foul and makes me nauseous (I hear roasting human flesh smells like pork - would you find that appealing?)

If you do go vegetarian, you will lose those cravings. You just have to change your perspective on what meat truly is: it isn't food, it's the flesh of an animal.

Not at all.

No, It's mainly ethical for me.
The smell and look of meat
depress and disgust me.

Also my mindset has changed.
I always crave broccoli, wheat
grass, grain and water now.
When you know that you're
an herbivore you think like one.

I don't think of meat as food
I think of it as carrion ort road
kill.

I have a history of restricted meat consumption. When I was in the "messianic Judaism" movement, I followed the Biblical diet layed out in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. So, it wasn't as big a deal for me as it may have been for others. I'm going on 4 months now, and I'm doing pretty good. I don't crave meat at all.

My father came over and cooked dinner ( I am new to the whole Vegan lifestyle ) he cooked all the Asparagus in the juice of the steak he cooked I had one and about barfed, I had to throw it away. I didnt think it would affect me but it did.

I've been vegetarian my whole life. Meat just plainly disgusts me. People that eat meat have this sour odor on them. Not all vegetarians are vegetarians because of "animal cruelty."
