What is a level 4 vegan?!

Question:

What is a level 4 vegan?

In the movie Transamerica, the hippy hitchhiker that they pick up describes himself as a 'level 4 vegan. I don't eat anything that casts a shadow.'

I had never heard that term before and wondered what it involved?

Answers:
It's a joke. Vegetarians don't eat meat (i.e. beef, poultry, pork, lamb, etc.). Not only do vegans not eat meat, but they don't eat or use any animal bi-product (i.e. dairy, eggs, wool, leather etc.).

Saying that the character doesn't eat anything "that casts a shadow" is a satirical remark on the extremes to which vegans will go in an attempt not to harm animals. Obviously, everything casts a shadow. If this were true, the "Level-4 Vegan" must not be eating at all.

By the way, this joke originally came from an episode of the Simpsons.

dude, it was a joke.
there are other sub categories that are real btw though, for example straight edgers who are vegan and tee total.

No such thing. Either a person is vegan or not. There are no levels.
