Is this junk vegetarian, vegan, or neither?!

Question:

Is this junk vegetarian, vegan, or neither?

http://www.enfamil.ca/en/products/formul...

Soy baby formula. Note:

"Enfamil Soy is a soy based formula for babies from birth onwards that are fussy, gassy or have diarrhea and require milk-free formula or for vegetarian diets."

Uh, okay. I'm not sure why soy is required for "vegetarian" diets. I wrote to them.

Reply:

"Even though Enfamil Soy is lactose-free and milk protein-free, it would NOT be suitable for vegan diets. This is due to the Vitamin D source which is synthesized from cholesterol derived from lanolin from sheep's wool. Therefore, Enfamil Soy would be suitable for "vegetarian" diets."

(I wrote back, pointing out that not having that info public anywhere but putting "The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends the use of soy-based formulas for those babies...vegan" was pretty misleading; no reply.)

Is it even vegetarian? Do you think it seems like it's promoted as vegan?

Answers:
Your right it is Junk.. not even true Vegetarian
cause the Vitamin D even comes from the wrong source.. lanolin and that's animal. Sure
an animal doesn't have to die to use it so some might consider it a vegetarian cause in the strict
sense of Vegetarianism that's what Vegetarianism is about simply that animals shouldn't die for our health! I won't use any lanolin products however! I'm not Vegan but I am a vegetarian and I rarely eat eggs cause of the cruel practices of animals. I do eat eggs occasionally free range if I can get them.. these are harder to get in the winter time!
Vegetarians can eat eggs but I care about animals but that isn't the reason I came a vegetarian but one of the reasons I remain a vegetarian. I simply Don't like the sight of blood and don't like the taste of meat!
Write to The Company that makes the products and ask them if their product is free
of animal fats. Western Family and also So-Nice say their soy-products contain no animal fats whatsoever! Better for U is Coconut milk
or Rice milk these are vegan to and lactose free!

soy beans are veggies and either diet would be fine.

It is not good for vegans...because they do not use anything that comes rom animals (read the sheep part again).

Vegetarians..will use some food from animal sources..as long as they are not eating the actual animals....

Vegetarian

No one is a true vegan . see this video

After browsing their site quickly it's apparent that they are not, not promoting it to Vegans. It's easy to get the idea that it would be ok.

Companies such as this are VERY careful as to what they say or do not say. They say it's vegetarian (since vegetarians supposedly, according to most North Americans) consume animal products such as dairy, eggs, etc. just not meat, so lanolin should be okay then, it's really just hair oil. They do not say it's vegan, "The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends" it for vegans, the company does not.

Personally, vegan or not, I'd never consume formula, thus, I'd never give it to my baby either. If my wife, for example, died, I'd just find someone who will volunteer to breastfeed the baby.

This company is also VERY careful to never suggest that formula is in anyway comparible to breastmilk. But, if you stop breastfeeding, use our formula as "According to the Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada, iron-fortified formula is the best alternative to breast milk." See, the company never says anything, but quotes other organizations that these companies likely have in their back pockets anyway.

These companies are totally evil anyway. Overseas where there are no such regulations against blatant lies and poor quality product, these same companies are getting away with murder as they will not be punished; poor quality product that lacks nutrition and babies get sick and die, just sickens me. There are whole documentaries about what these companies are up to at home and overseas, and always in the poorest and least educated countries and neighbourhoods.

To me, this would not be vegetarian or vegan. I guess you could make a case that sheep are not necessarily killed for the lanolin, but lanolin is still just nasty.
