Why do people who are nonvegetarian think they know everything?!

Question:

Why do people who are nonvegetarian think they know everything?

I mean, I'm not vegetarian, but someone told me, " If people are so concerned about eating meat, then why are they eating plants? They are living things too!!" Well I think that eating animals is different than eating plants because plants don't have a mind of their own. They cannot breathe the way animals do. They cannot feel pain and whimper like animals do. Animals actually feel, breathe, and see, unlike plants. Don't you agree with me.
(and if you don't, screw you!)

Answers:
I know the reason that I stopped eating meat is because I love animals. I totally agree with you. My mother (who still doesn't know that I have stopped eating meat) says that "vegetarians are hypocrites." She says that it's wrong to not want to eat meat for the fact that animals are alive because plants are alive too. But like you said, everything I know about pain is humans and animals feel pain due to their nerves sending signals to their brain, causing the brain to recognize the pain (that may not be completely scientific) and I also know that plants don't seem to have nerves or brains, like humans or animals. So my conclusion is that the big difference between plants and animals is animals know and feel when you kill them and plants don't. Another big difference is that you don't always have to kill an entire plant to enjoy it's fruits (or sometimes veggies). A lot of plants have fruit that naturally falls off of the plant when it's ripe, leaving the plant itself alive.

I'm not trying to say that it is wrong for a person to eat meat (it's not my place to judge) but at the same time, I don't think that I should be judged either. I no longer eat meat because it doesn't feel right to me anymore and that's a personal decision. I didn't just wake up one day and say "hey, no meat for me." It took me a LONG time to come to this decision and I don't regret it.

My Opinion

there's a saying that you are what you eat - from this one can already conjure up a lot of wondering and wandering thoughts. myself i like to eat, and cook, and cook for my family that even if i am thin my family isn't. international cuisine all the more makes eating so much interesting. there are vegan cuisine that approximates the taste of meat dishes and there are meat dishes that melts-in-your mouth. then there's bread and cakes and goodies. salads and appetizers and desserts. it's best to agree and move on to where we go from here than be rendered immobile just because of any debate

Yeah,I agree. You kill more plants by eating meat anyways because the animal eats plants, then you eat the animal PLUS more veggies on the side. By cycling grain through livestock, we lose 90% of the protein, 96% of the calories, all of its carbohydrates, and all of its nutritional fiber.

Agreed. It's nice to hear a sympathetic voice.

I always thought of it this way: When you throw a live lobster into a pot of boiling water (considered to be a humane way of killing the lobster), it tries to jump out. It may not have the higher brain waves that a human has, but it knows it's painful to be thrown into a pot of boiling water. When I throw potatoes into a pot of boiling water, they don't try to jump out. That tells me that, even though a potato is a living thing, it doesn't feel any sort of pain. Therefore, it isn't cruel to eat a potato.
