In Indian Metropolis(Chennai-Bangalore, Hyderabad,Tiruvanandapuaram,Bo... people can talk good British English.In Southern India -(first four Metropolis) English will be more useful than Hindi even in small towns-Hindi will be of NO use.(Bombay,Calcutta,Delhi is not appearing in the text)

i don't think you would have to know any Hindi or Gujarati when you go to India especially if you plan on traveling to all the major cities... but if you do go to the little towns then i would learn the basics like hello, how are you, and asking if anyone knows how to speak English.

Hindi is not the only language you can use in India. While you are in North India, it will be helpful to you knowing some Hindi words if you are not having a guide who knows English.
