Are Matches Vegetarian?!

Question:

Are Matches Vegetarian?

I have a veggie friend and he got told that matches are not vegetarian is that true?

i thought they were just wood and phosherous

Answers:
First of all, I would like to note that matches can not be vegetarian because you don't eat them. The matches themselves do not eat meat so that does make them vegetarian. I think I know what your asking though. The first modern, self-igniting match was invented in 1805 by K. Chancel, assistant to Professor Louis Jacques Thénard of Paris. The head of the match consisted of a mixture of potassium chlorate, sulfur, sugar, and rubber. They were ignited by dipping the tip of the match in a small asbestos bottle filled with sulfuric acid. So the answer is year, they are vegetarian because they don't contain animal product.

I think someone is just trying to screw with you friends head. If anything they may be refering to wooden matches, which come from trees that had to be cut down somewhere that could have taken some animals habitat. If still in doubt tell your friend to by a lighter,...I guess that would solve any lingering worries

Maybe there are animal traces in them.... you certainly asked something different! I would have thought like you do but lets see what brainy people reply!!

Man, vegetarians will believe anything.

Yes, they are vegan too.
So who ever said that is some crazy kid.

I believe the blog your referring to says Smith says this. Which pretty much automatically makes it a joke.

P.S. If you have to ask, you'll never know.

Vegetarian is a descriptor used to define a person who sticks to a vegetarian diet.

A vegetarian diet consists of EATING no meat, fish, poultry or slaughter by-products.

Matches are suitable for vegetarians to use, but they are not "vegetarian" themselves.

Only the definition of Vegan extends to USING animal products.

I'm not saying this is morally right, but by the defintions, veggie is about diet, vegan is about diet AND animal use.

Personally as a veggie I would not use matches if they contained animal fats.

Yes, Matches are Vegetarian!

Matches are vegetarian, but many things in our day-to-day lives are not. Ink, car tires, etc. These things are unavoidable and it's best not to get hung up over them.

what a weird question. you don't eat them so they cant be vegetarian or not...
