Ever fell into a vegetarian trap?!

Question:

Ever fell into a vegetarian trap?

Just thought I'd warn my fellow vegetarians (especially the newbies) to always read the labels on the food you buy. The strangest food items can have meat in them. There are cans of refried beans containing lard (hog fat) and french fries containing beef fat (Mcdonalds). Please, let me know if you have found animal fat or meat in anything not listed here (unusual). :-)

You are so right!..... I was buying vanilla frosting for a cake (I always read labels) and was horrified to see that some frostings contain beef lard! I also notice that "Oriental" flavored ramen noodles have beef extracts in them. Keep reading those labels!!! :)

Naahh ...to smart for that.

I do not know a whole lot about vegitarians but I do know that a true vegitarian goes very deep. Doesn't just stay away from meat. I personally think that it's some type of an obessive compulsive thing. And I've also seen vegitarians who are trying to eat really healthy go and have themselves a grand old time drinking. Where's the health logic in that??

Lipase in cheese.

You find gelatin in the weirdest things. There are marshmallows and brands of yogurt and of course Jell-o, but then they go and put it in Mentos and candy hearts.

actually McDonalds haven't used beef fat in their french fry oil for decades, for financial reasons. Instead they use a variety of artificially created chemicals to imitate the taste of beef fat, because consumer suveys showed that customers preferred the taste. The chemicals are suspected to be carcinogenic, mutagenic and may even cause conditions like schizophrenia, epilepsy and down syndrome. src1.

Some products I have come across in my time that contain animal products and surprised me are:
1) basil pesto contains grand padano cheese in 95% of brands on the world market
2) wine, red and white, contains egg white (used to filter out sedimentation) in 99.999% of brands on the world market
3) lemon pepper seasoning contains chicken extract in some brands. src2

wine, kimchi

Re. "actually McDonalds haven't used beef fat in their french fry oil for decades..."

Not really. They use it in some countries, and not in others.

Last I looked, US McFries were 'safe,' Canadian, nope.

I hate to tell you this, but take a look at the package labelling regulations. I have since I used to own a bakery. The regulations are highly lax and basically people can do whatever they want. There are so many acceptable ingredients that are poisonous. Did you know that iron oxide (rust) is allowed as an ingredient for red colouring? They use actual iron filings to put into products for iron content. Just in the baking section alone they list ingredient after ingredient none of which are natural in any way and very harmful if eaten. All baked goods are actually fake. They are not real bread, buns, pastries, etc. Even many organic bakeries are only going organic for the money, and not exactly because they are honest vegan, naturalists or whatever. Most have no conscience; it’s just money to them.

Plus, every ingredient does not have to be listed on the product label. Only if the ingredient is over a certain amount. You can also hide ingredients within other ingredients. Such as having it added to the flour. Every tried honey that was SO sweet or maple syrup that just made you feel yucky. They can add ingredients to products and not list them if it is part of the “process”. Such as adding water and white sugar (usually not vegan) to honey to thin it out and allow the machinery to be able to process it as it would be too thick otherwise and jam up the machines. Oils and lard can be added to maple syrup as “defoaming” agents for the boiling process and do not have to be listed on the ingredients. I worked in restaurants, you can see they also have oils with defoaming agents in them for their deep-fryers. They use it for popcorn too. Even plain rice has a “cereal coating” on it to prevent it from being all sticky.

I can go on and on about this, but anyone can read the regulations themselves, they are freely available, and very extensive and there are many many ways to hide ingredients. The system is designed this way. Sure, they protect us from instant death, but these products are still poisonous, carcinogenic, or unhealthy.

Anyway, page after page it’s horror after horror. The whole system it designed for the manufacturers to allow them to put just about anything they want into their products as long as it doesn’t kill anyone or make them immediately sick (slowly sick over time is okay because it’s difficult to prove).

So, at least research the company and see what kind of morals, if any, they have, or claim to have. Have fun!
