Why do people assume that vegetarians?!

Question:

Why do people assume that vegetarians?

eat nothing but "bunny food" and think we nibble on carrots all day? My diet is more varied and interesting than most people that I know. I cook alot of exoctic ethnic foods, and my daughters lunchbox is often the topic of the day-the principal comes by to see what interesting foods she has. Her friends LOVE to eat dinner at my house. So many people criticize us for being vegetarian. We don't like meat, want meat, or need meat. We get all of the vitamins. protien and minerals we need from whole grains, vegetables and fruits. We are healthy and thriving. Why does vegetarianism seam like such a big mystery and "hippie" thing. It just a lifestyle, nothing more

Answers:
People that have not been exposed to the vegitarian culture have no idea of what foods are available without meat. Most of the people that talk about "bunny food" have a diet consisting of mostly meat and the only thing they really think of vegtable wise is a salad.

It is just the response of the ignorant (meaning uninformed) people. I would say that would be a good opening for you to educate those people on the vegitarian lifestyle (if they are open to it) so they can be more educated on the subject.

Because some vegetarians do eat poorly. You clearly don't.

Also, many people don't understand that there are MANY reasons for being a vegetarian. While one person may not eat meat because they realize that can have a better diet without meat, other don't eat meat for religious, ethical, or even cost reasons.

Because of this, you are being lumped in with the people that scream "meat is murder."

If you have a good and varied diet, include the naysayers. But, please, don't stoop to their level by EVER commenting on someone's meat eating. OK?

Hooray for you, I am a veg and have been for a long time. I feel the same way.

When I did eat meat the meals were so bland, and uninteresting.

No meat for seventeen years and loving it.

biz not many peple are veggie people

while i am not a vegitarian myself i have occasionaly indulged in vegetarian cuisine. all too often it suffers from a profound lack of vision and generally pretty lame execution. this is the fault of the resturants and cooks, not the cuisine itself. those who diparage vegetarian cuisine as "boiring" or "bunny food" have obviously not sought out, or had the opportinity of enjoying vegetarian done right. vegetarian cuisine CAN be bold, innovative, and delicious when prepared properly and its vast number of ingredient options are engaged. it sounds like you have a firm handle on the unique challenges of vegetarian cooking, please continue to spread the good news about your chosen cuisine!

you should be sent to the gallo's
the gallo brothers

and have a few glasses of wine and chill out

are there any vegetarians out here that are happy

so what you don't eat meat
i don't care i dont run around and tell people i don't eat vegetables

GOOD FOR YOU!
I couldn't agree with you more. If people realized most of them eat meat(poultry, fish etc) for the sauce or seasonings on it they'll realize they don't like meat either.
Over & over it is proven Veggies & Vegans are the healthiest people on the planet. Less of the common killer like cancer, heart attacks, strokes. OBESITY!

I feel your pain! I am so sick and tired of being looked at differently just because I dont eat meat. It's ridiculous.

I feel bad for those people. I really do. Imagine how unhealthy they are when their total focus is meat. It just breaks my heart!

Like you, I'm a darned good cook. People LOVE to come to my house for dinner.

I do think we vegetarians are, generally speaking, given a very bad rap by women, specifically. You know the type. Obsessed with weight loss. So they nibble salad with no dressing at meals. They tell people they are vegetarian rather than telling people they are obsessed with being thin to the point of malnutrition. THOSE people are the ones vegetarians are generally assumed to "all" be like.

And they're not even vegetarian!

I think it's because a fairly large portion of our population doesn't eat fruits or vegetables on a regular basis. I think the statistic is that around 10% of Americans don't ever eat fresh fruit. With dietary habits that include hardly more than refined foods and animal products, It's hardly surprising that people don't understand how someone can not eat those things and survive.

well people in general is not very smart or informed, and selfish
they dont' care about anything else they don't have to, so they don't know anything about vegg

Totally agree with you! I've been veggie for 2yrs almost and my diet has WAY more variety than it ever did when I ate meat. I mean, when you eat meat... your diet revolves around four products. Beef, chicken, pork & fish. When you are a vegetarian, you could have a completely different main course every day for two weeks! Eggplant, tofu, tempeh (which I haven't mastered yet), beans, etc. and you can still throw in the fake chic'n, burger, etc if you want!

My daughters friends also love eating at my house. I have a few friends that continue to be skeptical, but they've never complained about what I've fed them!

Liar.
>>We get all of the vitamins. protien and minerals we need from whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

Where do you get B12? Not from grains, vegetables and fruits.

I'm an omnivore. My diet is more varied than yours.
Why do vegetarians assume "meat" eaters are cavemen who only eat bronto-burgers 24/7?

>>Totally agree with you! I've been veggie for 2yrs almost >>and my diet has WAY more variety than it ever did when I >>ate meat. I mean, when you eat meat... your diet revolves >>around four products. Beef, chicken, pork & fish.

That's retarded. Why does eating meat preclude you from including everything else in your diet? I've never heard of a meatetarian diet. Why if you eat beef, chicken, pork & fish would you have to exclude the entire vegetable spectrum? Sheesh that's ignorant.

I SO agree with you and I am fed up with it too. Why are there so many stereotypes with being veg? It's either a hippie thing, a gay thing, or fad. I don't think so! I get questioned a lot about my choice to be vegan. I try to use the opportunity to educate people, but usually they are too close-minded to really listen. They just think, Oh, you're a freak or How can you survive off of no animal products (as if we need animal products to sustain our own lives). Puh-lease! It is way healthier, environmentally friendly, and morally right to be veg. The problem is that people are raised and brought up to believe it's normal and then it's a tradition or commonplace. I've kind of given up on some people, but I can at least be a good example in that I am healthier than them. Sooner or later they will notice this.

because those people who say that are fat meat loving morons that always think their way is the right way.

Because, they have no idea what they are talking about. Now see if they have a valid point that's fine that's their opinon, but when they say things such as "oh but you're eating plants and their alive." I hate that :|. Hm can ya give me a recipe for a exotic dish?
