I am a new vegetarian. any suggestions and/or tips? THANKS in advance!?
I am a new vegetarian and I was wondering if anyone had any tips and food shopping advice? I am 17. I usually bring my lunch to school, anything on what I could bring as a lunch? I would also like some recipes or some sites with recipes.
Also, if I get chips how do I know if they have any animal product in it? I heard some chips do.
And what type of vegetarian would I be? No meat but diary (no eggs). I eat fish though, is that considered a meat?
Thanks for any advice!

The hyperlink to "How to become a vegetarian" is the best advice I have to give, and I added books and good recipe websites.
There is also a link to a thorough explanation of why "Vegetarians don't eat fish."
Thanks and Good Luck!!

well, fish is a meat. and something that you could bring as a lunch is a salad, or soup.
One, of course fish is considered meat. Honestly, I don't know why anybody is confused about this.
Two, my best advice would be to switch back.
If you eat fish, then you are a pescetarian, not a vegetarian. A fish is a living breathing creature who wants to go on doing so. Vegetarians do not end a life.
Please don't take that as a criticism. There is nothing wrong with being a pescetarian.
The kind of vegetarian you want to be is entirely up to you. Make educated choices. Choices of conscience. Not passing thought.
I love whole wheat pita for lunch. You can stuff them with something different every day. Or use them flat like a personal pizza.
Things to stuff your pita with:
Grilled veggies and sprouts.
Sundried tomato, pine nuts and salad greens.
Grilled tofu, mushrooms and spinach
Falafel
Beans and Rice
Funa (fake tuna made with TVP)
Fegg Salad (fake egg salad made with Tofu)
Seitan and veggies
Avocado and mixed greens
I'm fond of Miso Mayo (in several flavors) as a condiment for my pitas.
The only way to know about the chips is to read the ingredients. Most of them are loaded with sugar these days, so you're better off making your own. Make flavored pita chips. Yum Yum!
I also find that cutting up fruits and veggies to bring is more enticing than whole fruits and veggies. If you bring an apple, cut it up. Sprinkle it with lemon to keep it from turning brown. Sliced carrot. Sliced celery. Make "chips" from zucchini, cucumber, summer squash and the like. Salt them with Spike.
This is a great website. You will learn about vegatarians, recipes, arguments, issues, etc. Vegatarians do not eat any source of protein unless it comes from a plant such as Soy. If any protien comes from an animal or fish or anything that lives and is killed for food, vegatarians don't eat. From the website below:
“Vegetarian” is a blanket term for a variety of diets that exclude meat, poultry, and fish. The most healthful, the pure vegetarian (or "vegan") diet, only includes foods of plant origin, such as nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. A "lacto-vegetarian" includes these plant foods and also dairy products. A "lacto-ovo-vegetarian" consumes both dairy and eggs.
fish is not a meat it's a poultry and it's your choice if you chooce to eat it or not.
okay, first a fish is an animal of the sea and it has a nervous system which means it can feel pain.
second, grab yourself a FUN vegetarian/vegan cookbook to keep you excited. My first one was called "Vegetables Rock" and you can find it on Amazon.com used for like $3. One of my favorites is How It All Vegan.
third, stock up on veggie staples so you can make things that keep and travel well, like hummus. (Chickpeas, lemon juice, olive oil, cummin, red pepper, garlic, salt, black pepper, tahini - mix in a food prosessor starting with small amounts of lemon juice until you get a good consistency) This goes great on salid, pita, whole wheat crackers, veggies you name it.
Some of the most fullfilling vegetarian meals are ethnic. Make a visit to your local indian grocer for spices. most indian meals can use whatever veggies you have on hand and just require the wonderful array of spices that you can buy in bulk.
same with thai- find a curry sauce to cook with (i like panang). I always keep coconut milk, energ egg replacer, powdered soy milk (cheaper, tasty, doesn't go bad), chickpeas, brown rice, joseph's whole wheat pita, and a freezer full of frozen veggies. Don't be afraid to ask how things are cooked when you go out to eat. If its a small unbusy restaurant, they might even show you how to cook something. Good luck.
P.S. As for the chips, read the ingredients and stay away from animal shortening, and lard. Chips are totally unhealthy and I advise making the switch to whole grain crackers.
Eat what your comfortable with - and don't let the lectures get you down.
Portabello mushrooms - grill them, saute them, bake them with sauces - great flavor and filling for when you are missing something 'meaty'
bring fake meat and cheese sandwiches. you cant get fake bologna or turkey(i suggest the bologna) or just PB&J. bying pizza is good or a bean and cheese burrito. also for home foods try morning star brand for fake chicken products, boca brand for bigger fake meats(burgers, ribs), and smart brand for smaller stuff(bacon, hot dogs, ground beef). yes fish is meat so your a pescatarian i believe.
As far as shopping is concerned, just make sure you buy a variety of foods. Like the food pyramid says, the more colorful your food, the better you are. Make sure this colorful food is healthy, food of course! Some new veggies rely on pasta and junk food simply b/c it's not meat. That's the worst thing you could do.
For your lunch, you can make veggie wraps, pita sandwiches with lettuce, cucumber, hummus, tomato and the like. You could also have salads - those are always good.
Sounds to me like you would be a pescaterian (or a pesca-vegetarian) since you eat fish. Some staunch veggies would argue that you aren't a "real" vegetarian since you eat the flesh of an animal....blah blah. But there is a label for you. :-)
There's my two cents. Good luck!
