What is a good vegetarian turkey substitute?! like for a thanksgiving dinner?
my family has recently gone vegetarian and now we're looking into all the alternatives. one thing we'll miss is having turkey during the holidays (read: thanksgiving).
is there any substitute out there? hopefully something that can be passed off as regular turkey to our meat-eating relatives?
any suggestions would be awesome, thanks

this is tofurky, tis great
HOT LOVE
There is something called Tofurkey. They make it up here in the Northwest. I'm told it's pretty good.
You should check into the Tofurkey. I saw it advertised last Thanksgiving.
I've heard of something called Tofurkey but am scared to try it
Some companys make Tofu turkeys that really taste like turkeys
If you do not like the thaught of killing birds for thier meat then do not try to fake it by looking for somthing that tasts like the meat of the bird.
As an 8 year former vegetarian, now reformed to meat eater, I can tell you there is no substitute at all....your relatives will NOT be happy with anything except turkey....I suggest not throwing a holiday dinner at your house, however if you go to a relatives house there are usually tons of delicious vegetarian sides!
I would think your best bet would be to make a turkey for your meat eating guests and a tofu based dish for your vegetarian friends and family. That or eat the meat for this one special occasion if you will miss it so much.
you could buy a Tofurky at a health food store (with groceries)...
or here are some links to recipes (have not tried any of these yet)

My favorite turkey substitute is UnTurkey by Now and Zen, but it looks like their website isn't working so maybe they're not in business anymore.
Tofurkey is really good and the company has deli slices too - http://www.tofurkey.com/products.htm...
Good luck!
turkey shaped tofu maranted in a nice suce.
I do not know if you eat fish or not, but a big roasted, stuffed salmon is a wonderful substitute. There are many wonderful nut loaves as well.
NOTHING tastes like turkey. I still drool at the smell of it cooking. There are substitutes and fakes but, I am not a tofu fan. Besides, if I stopped eating meat, why would I eat something that imitates it. But that is just me.

Let turkey eaters see this page. They might embrace nut loaves after they read where those yummy birds come from.
I hope you find something from the list below. In 30 years I have never found a good fake bird. IMHO, trying to pass off fake meat as real is as bad as trying to pass off carob as fine chocolate. There is just no comparison.
There are lots of wonderful meals without turkey. Some of the images below look quite yummy but you know they will not fool anyone into thinking they are the real deal. But chances are they will still taste great.
That is one thing you can never do with carob LOL.
We had Quorn last Thanksgiving, it's so close to chicken, it's scary LOL
We just sauteed the Naked cutlets (that's what they are called), sliced them and made a yummy vegetarian onion gravy. It was really good.
Why is your family becoming vegetarian anyway? You're going to miss turkey? There's lots of other good food to be had like stuffing (you'll have to make homemade since store bought has chicken fat) mashed potatoes (use pepper or biscuit gravy since mushroom has beef fat) , cranberry sauce, and deviled eggs. Why anyone would WANT to eat a big dead bird is beyond me but my relatives seem to like it. I have to leave the kitchen when I see them get that big dead bird out because it makes me sick.

and Tofurkey is the closest thing to turkey you can buy.
Try a Quorn roast. (That's the name of the brand.) They're excellent, and they are certainly the closest alternative to turkey I've found.
Firstly, I'll confirm that Unturkey is gone
Here's the best two recipes you'll find on the web for cruelty-free replacements. My experience is that meaties prefer the second tofu based recipe over the first seitan based one.
