Vegitarians: why is it okay to eat plants?!

Question:

Vegitarians: why is it okay to eat plants?

For those vegetarians, and vegans, who don't eat meat because "it is not their's to take" or because "they don't want any animals to suffer" why is killing and eating plants any different?

They too are living creatures with nervous systems. They have social interaction and sexual drives. We have only just begun to understand the life of plants. Is anyone not taking up the cause of the plants? Is this because they don't have mouths to scream or cute little eyes to feel sorry for?

I like Kylie M's response and would also like to add that structurally, humans suit a plant-based diet rather than animal -based, and we have to eat something!

Compare humans to any carnivore and the differences are obvious. We haven't got the claws or jaw structure or the large canines for tearing flesh raw off a freshly killed body (because cooked and tenderised doesn't really count).

Our intestines are long and convoluted, much like a herbivore's, to allow longer processing of fibres. If you look at a carnivore's intestinal system, it is more like a straight tube - in one end, out the other - to allow quick breakdown and use of the nutrients in flesh and quick elimination of the by-product which will putrefy if left in a warm damp environment.

Our stomach acid pH is much higher than a carnivore's. You need a strong acid to quickly break the protein down to use it effectively.

We have enzymes in our saliva designed for carbohydrate breakdown, as well as molars to help grind down plants to increase the surface area for these enzymes to work.

While I do understand that plants have nervous systems and are sensitive to energies, they can grown new limbs when they are torn off; when removed from the tree or out of the ground, fruit and vegetables will stay fairly vital and fresh for a longer period of time than exposed flesh, indicating to me that they haven't suffered too much. Also, fruit and beans are produced to be eaten, to extend the life of the plant by spreading seeds.

It all depends on how you do it, which is why I choose organic food that has been loved from planting to picking.

i'm not sure how you could possible compare the life of an animal to that of a plant. i would be interested in learning more about the sources that support your argument. if what you are saying is true, then it would be cruel to cut your grass or kill weeds in a garden. i am a new vegetarian, striving to become a vegan, and i chose to have this lifestyle because of my compassion for living animals and my knowledge of how animals raised for consumption are abused. in my opinion, you cannot compare the life of an animal to that of a plant. it just doesn't make sense to me.

Ever think about this.YOU EAT LESS PLANTS BY EATING THEM DIRECTLY!By cycling food through livestock you lose 96% of the calories, you barely get back any of the calories you put in.If there were 100 starving kids, would you rather feed 100 of them rice,or just 4 of them meat?Plants also don't have feelings, quit trying to make your self feel better about eating meat, they don't have brains nor a central nervous system. That is the most ridiculous argument against vegetarianism. No logical person would say plants have feelings, but when you want to defend your meat eating you'll reach for such a ridiculous argument.I win,you lose.

They claim they don't have a soul. Or mental capacity. Thats why
Funny thing is,the planet needs plants to survive. If youtake out the plants you will destroy the eco-system. So you could make a more valid claim about your point with that.

Good thing a vegetarian diet requires less plants to die.

To raise and feed a an animal for slaughter causes much much more plants to die, in 1 bale of hay contains hundreds dead grass and alfalfa plants!! 80% of Americas cereal crops are grown to feed animals (think of all the poor plants that have to die!) It takes 14 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of meat. The amount of land to feed 20 vegans will only feed 1 average omnivore. Save the plants go VEGAN!!!

The statistics I have provided are true, however I was just poking fun at your question. The "whole plants are creatures too" is sooo last century its laughable. Its a weak argument, and any human who thinks logically would agree. Plants are not creatures lol

Sorry you are gonna have to do better than that.... I would take some debate classes if I were you.

Well for one it kills more plants eating meat. When you raise animals, you have to feed them lots of plants first. Meat eaters indirectly kill tons of plants. They dont have a nervous system like animals do, they tried searching for one, they dont. Also theirs a difference, plants dont move, when you kill them they dont move but thats alright cause they never moved anyway. With animals, its freaky to see them living for a moment and then not moving the next.

First the plant will still grow when you cut it.

There are 4 kingdom,
human, animal, vegetation and mineral.

We can not survive eat mineral.
So we have to eat to survive.
So it is a matter of sensitive and you hoice.

You prefer eat animal pruduce or vegetable. it is up to you.
I prefere vegetation.
Because is not killing,if you cut vegetation they are still growing.
just least sensitive.

Plants are not creatures and feel no pain. They dont socialize and do not have sexual drives. Stop making up stories.

I don't know all, but eating wax is a great alternative to eating animals or plants.

why would you choose to eat something that can walk, talk, mate, and that used to be alive. Would a human eat another human? Pretty much if they had no choice, but yuck. We don't think of plants this way. Plants are healthier for you and they don't cause problems and diseases as much as other living "killed, dead" animals, fish, birds, etc. do.

I "eat" plants to appease their sexual drives.

im sorry but since when do plants have central nervous systems?

i do not eat animals because i believe we are all equal. humans are animals and i would never eat a human. dogs are animals and i would never eat a dog! thats how i view all animals.

Are you serious? Plants don't have a sex drive...THEY'RE ASSEXUAL.

Plants don't have a central nervous system, that is what causes us to feel pain.

Before you come on here trying to sound smart, you should do your research :)

because it takes 5lbs of grain to feed a cow to make the cow grow 1lb of beef

so it's more efficent to grow plants and feed it to humans
