Is it required for a school to have vegetarian options?
My friend is a vegetarian and sometimes there is not any vegetarian foods.
Answers:
they are, unfortunetly most places do not offer any/many vegetarian food and what they do offer tends to be fattening so usually I can only order a basic salad(which is good anyway, but I would prefer more options). School menus aren't very healthy; even when I ate meat, the meals were either fried or pasta based with cake and fries as a side. I find it hypocritical the schools talk about nutrition and promote athletics, but do not provide healthy and/or a varity of meals.
No. They probably have a salad bar.
I thought so because at my school theres always veggie wrap options or salads, I thought it was!!
No it is not and it shouldn't be.
Your friend is right. I called the school nutritionist to see if there was, and she thought I was nuts. She told me kids get the nutrition of vegetables from the sauce on pizza, and ketchup. How absurd. I told her my daughter was vegetarian, and wondered if there were options. The clueless woman told me that sometimes salad is served with the meal. Schools are clueless about nutrition
nope that the responsibilty of that person to pack there own vegan lunch .Not the schools responsibilty to make exceptions for 2 students in a school of 500 students to make a vegan lunch. Not required for the school districts to make that allowance . That is what parents are for to fix your own food and take your own vegan food from home. The schools don't want be resposible for any allergy's a student may have toa vegan menu. So bring your own lunch .
It's not required as in it's a law. Most places will accommodate vegetarians because it's relatively inexpensive to throw together a salad bar or provide veggie wraps, but if they are tight on space, they might not have the ability to provide anything extra. Obviously, your friend's school doesn't think it would be a worthwhile option. Suggest to your friend that he/she get a petition together asking the school to provide vegetarian alternatives. Maybe if the school sees how many people (and how much $$ they could make) would be interested in purchasing vegetarian items, they'll provide them.
Schools have atrocious food options. Even if they have veggie options it is usually something like lettuce and tomato salad (who could live on that) or French Fries or Pasta. Students should bring their lunches if they want something nutritious - whether they are vegetarian or not.
They don't typically cater to vegetarian options any more than they cater to Kosher options, Asian options, Lactose-free options, Muslim options, etc.
If the student can't eat what's provided at the school, then it's his or his parent's responsibility to pack food that he can eat.
I think it would vary from state to state and school system to school system. Most states don't have any regulations in place that require a healthy alternative to the fat and salt-laden entrees on the average school menu. Our children do good if they get offered a fatty cheese pizza or wilted tomato and lettuce salad as a "healthy" choice.
I suggest that you get together with other students who are interested in a healthier diet and try talking to the school administration. If they aren't interested in what you have to say, then you and your parents should attend a school board meeting and make your views known.
In the meantime, the best thing that your friend can do is to pack his own vegetarian lunch. It's not always easy to find vegetarian options that don't need refrigeration, but it is possible.
it's not required, however I think they should have some Vegan options. Anyone can eat something that is Vegan, Vegetarians, and meat eaters alike can eat Vegan food. It's cost effective (once you determine demand for the item) and includes everybody.
Most schools do. They offer salads, veggies and PBJ sandwiches. I think it's just better to bring your own though!
