I'm trying to lose weight, I've been a vegetarian for 4 years. Any suggestions?
Hey there...
Over the past four years, I have gained 35 lbs (gone from 125 to 160 - however, I am a near 6 ft tall woman)... I'm not obese so to speak, but I would like to feel I've got better control over my figure. My diet consists primarily of fresh veggies, tofu, and tvp... Granted, I've become quite the tvp/tofu fiend over the past year. Any recommendations that won't turn my vegetarian diet back into blatant salad abuse? (Oi... so... much... salad...) Did I perhaps just go too crazy with "variety" in the form of tofu and tvp?

I guess I should add that I have some limitations due to surgeries, etc. Working out is very difficult for me now... but I try to do as much walking/jogging as I can.

Um, 160 lbs and you're six feet tall? You don't need to lose weight.
tofu is usually low fat.
where most vegetarians go wrong is typically cheese as a protein source.
If you use that, cut it out.
Course there is excercise.
That always helps
Don't kill ur self with being vegies if it's hard. just Don't forget to do excercises!! It's So helping. You can do run, or swimming!! Love ur life!!
i dont think it matters that u r a vegi or nt, and it also dsnt matter wt u eat, but make sure nting goes in excess, regular exersice and lots of liquid will help u out
Being a vegetarian doesn't prevent you from getting fat; it will certainly help loosing weight. Most important thing is developing your self control and not eat unless you are hungry. To motivate yourself, constantly think about your figure and how beautiful you could be and how much attention and admiration you can get from guys, in addtion to avoiding the bad health effects of being overweight. When the stomoch says 'hunger', drink some water, see if it subsides. If it doesn't subside for more than one half hour, then eat, otherwise don't. It is most important to add regular exercise of some sort also.
You haven't mentioned what you drink or snack on. If you eat potato chips or candy, cut that out and snack on non-citrus fruit for awhile which contain less sugar and is lower in carbs.
Basically, cut out sugar completely if you can by using an alternative sweetener and also cut out any white breads, white rice and white pasta. (Buy whole wheat instead). **Check the sugar content of sauces you buy... all of this makes a difference.
If you drink alcohol, try lower sugar options like red wine or clear spirits with diet soda.
It all adds up and sometimes we don't even think about it.
Exercise and drink plenty of water. I lost 20lbs doing this! (over 4 months)
vegetarian diets can be very unhealthy because of the need to replace the protein with anything that is not meat. lower your carb intake and increase your protein intake. drink lots of water, skip the sodas, and eat smaller meals more frequently.
A proper vegetarian diet is very healthy for U. However it doesn't necessarily mean you'd lose weight! I infact gained weight becoming a vegetarian. When I was a meat eater the meat was blocking my arteries and that prevented me gaining weight. Doctors couldn't figure it out until I became vegetarian. Sounds like you don't need to lose any weight. 6' tall and 160 lbs. isn't bad.
it be bad if you become skin and bones. Who the heck wants one of those uglies they are mere skeletons. Most people want some meat on there mate! There are alot of good vegetarian books in Libraries and book stores. Don't listen to those that say vegetarian be unhealthy cause they don't know beans what they are talking about! I'm a vegetarian and I'm healthy as a horse!
exercise and stop eating so much - smaller portions, more often if needed. No food at night, period.
Stop lying to yourself about how much you eat. Drink water or wine only. No beer, no soda.
dont be a vegetarian as vegetarian food does not contain all types of nutriens as non vegetarian food u know eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly dont take any pills for losing weight
160 lbs for nearly 6 feet tall is not overweight!!
Vegetarians can begin to put on weight because of insulin resistance, a result of too much carb in the diet. Grain in the form of breads, pasta, buns, cake etc will exacerbate the problem (including all the wheat gluten from tvp if it is gluten based). High carbohydrate food could be playing havoc with your body's sugar levels. Another cause of weight gain could be too much food that is sugar and fat combined. If the weight gain is around the middle of the body, look to the carbs. If it is all over, look to sugar and fat.
If it is a carb problem, look at increasing high protein, low carb foods into your diet. Tofu is high preotein and low carb on its own but not suitable if it's mixed with lots of fatty sauces or high carb foods.
A mixture of ground sesame and pumpkin seeds, mixed with mashed veges or mashed tofu and made into patties is a good high protein and low carb food.
Nuts are also high in fat and could be causing your weight increase. Again, if the body fat is all over, look to fats as being a probable cause.
yeah, eat some chicken
just eat less, and buy a juicer and make juice
instead of eating a salad, you can put in half of lettus and a tomato and soem celery and drink it, it tastes good
or drink cucumber juice and eat oatmeal for breakfest
honey dew melon is a negative calorie food, meaning eating it will burn calorie and give you nutrients, so juice that or eat that, and just skip a meal when you do it
stop going to the bar 7 night a week
and drinking all of those IPA's & PORTERS
all night long
