Is there a Vegan or Vegetarian substitute for Fish Paste?
I m allergic to seafood and all fish products. I am cooking Vietnamese food with chicken instead of fish but the recipes still call for fish paste. Is there a subsitute for this that will give the dish the same flavor?
Answers:
sesame paste, most asian stores have it. Its quite good actually, tastes similar.
sorry ..you are barking up the wrong tree......it is not an appropriate question for the vegetarian/vegan forum......
here is the closest recipe that I have
Faux Fish Cakes
Serving Size : 8
1 pound extra-firm tofu
2 cups cooked brown rice
1 small onion -- minced
6 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes
2 tablespoons minced celery
2 tablespoons soy sauce -- (2-1/2)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon dill weed
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Pinch celery seed
1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
Mix the tofu, rice, onion, yeast and celery in a large bowl. Process the remaining ingredients, except for the flour, in a food processor until well blended. Add to the tofu mixture, along with the flour. Mix well. Form into 4-oz. patties and broil or pan fry for about 4 minutes on each side.

You just aren't going to get a really good answer here because we're not into fishy foods. Delete this question to get some of your points back and then re-ask in the Food>Ethnic category and they might have a better idea of what non-fish product would have the same taste!
BTW; I close all my answers like this, It's *not* a slam at you
