Why is it that his affected area continue swelling inspite of being a vegetrian?!

Question:

Why is it that his affected area continue swelling inspite of being a vegetrian?

My friend is a former athlete and become a victim of gout for 10 years and recently go into vegetarian diet.

Answers:
It's not just meat that causes gout.

"A number of factors seem to contribute to gout. Acute gout may be triggered by events such as surgery, heart attacks, or trauma. Use of alcohol or some medications, such as certain diuretics (also known as water pills), particularly those used to treat high blood pressure, can set off a gout attack. Certain foods, such as seafood and liver, and beverages, such as coffee and tea may contribute to the incidence of gout. A family history of gout is common for those who develop it, and this may be a result of genetic predisposition or environmental factors.

Some foods and drinks may cause your body to produce too much uric acid. To keep levels of uric acid low reduce your amount of certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, cocoa, tea, seafood, liver, gravy, peas, and spinach.
Alcohol (beer, wine, etc.) also stops uric acid from leaving your body and can trigger gout.
Sudden changes in your diet or dramatic weight gain/loss may also cause gout attacks."

Gout has more or less to do with a vegetarian diet.

Your friend has too much uric acid in him (also sodium urate).

He needs to drink little alcohol and start taking a supplement of essential fatty acids.
he may be missing this in his vegetarian diet. His Omega3 intake must be much too low.

Go for a fish oil capsule that has twice the omegra three than it has omega 6, and i you are completely vegetarian go for something like 'Udo's choice' essential fatty acids mix. It's great.
Also make sure he has a good B-Vitamin compact.

if your friend is eating vegetables that contain amines, such as spinach, he could be making maters worse. Google "foods low in amines" for information. Gout is definately affected by diet. He may have food allergies too. If he is allergic to soy, and replacing meat with soy products, such as tofu, it will make the matter worse

Gout is generally a "disease" of excess uric acid which form crystals around joints (most notably the large toe). Uric is primarily present in animal products. My guess is that he simply has not been Vegetarian for long enough for the diet to take effect. No to mention the damage done after 10 years of having gout has to be considerable. The condition did not happen overnight and it will not go away overnight. If he is not seeing a health care professional I would suggest he does so, if nothing else than to monitor his progress.

Let me know if I could do anything else to help.

Tell hom to continue but keep the diet balanced.

A good source of B vitamins is Marmite (or Vegemite) and flax seed oil instaed of fish oils.

Hope he soon feels better.
